We are reaching out to advise you of an increased health risk to dogs and their owners when visiting the Oregon Coast.  The State Public Health Veterinarian has shared information about an outbreak of the bacteria, Leptospirosis, in sea lions.  Cases have been confirmed in Lincoln, Tillamook and Clatsop counties.  Leptospirosis can be transmitted to dogs through contact with infected animal?s urine or other bodily fluids.  Please keep dogs away from all wildlife on the beach and take special care where sea lions are on the beach.   Leptospirosis is present worldwide and recent cases have been identified in California as well.  The last outbreak along the Oregon Coast was in 2010.  In addition to contact with marine mammals, dogs can be exposed via other wildlife or livestock.  Some additional risk factors include playing in rivers or lakes and hiking rural property.  *If you see a sick sea lion or other marine mammals on the beach, stay at least 50 feet away and call the Oregon State Police at (800) 452-7888. Symptoms can include fever, weakness, muscle pain; the infection can lead to kidney failure.   If you are concerned that your dog might be infected, contact your veterinarian immediately.  Fortunately, dogs can be protected with specific vaccinations.  A multi-strain Leptospirosis vaccine can reduce the risk of infection and decrease the severity of the disease if contracted.  This vaccine requires a two dose initial series and annual boosters.  It is best to consult with a veterinarian to determine your dog?s unique needs and risks when considering a vaccination.
