I decided to post a record of Barnum's owl pellet regurgitation.

The last time Barnum lasted 5 days before gracing us with an owl pellet.

February 26, 2010

Before the treatment started, he had daily owl pellets and would regurgitate all his food as well. We no longer see indigested food with his regurgitations.

This time Barnum lasted 7 days before gracing his kennel floor with an owl pellet. That is 2 more days between owl pellets. Which means Barnum is eating less indigestible items, pica, (no poop) from the yard. This is so wonderful. I look forward to the day when he no longer does this.

Barnum, a Leonberger, dxd at 6.5 months by stool sample & elevated ALT. Possibly born w/EPI. First symptom 8.5 weeks; a voracious appetite. Second symptom; regurgitates his food every day due to pica (not eating stools). Raw Meaty Bones starts on 6/1/2010. Receives 4 BioCase V capsules a.m & 4 BioCase V capsules p.m. Salmon Oil once a day. On 1/18/2010 the owl pellet record came to squeaking halt, 165 days. LOL! Bad humor. New record 7 months!!!

Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

Well, we have seen a decrease in Barnum's owl pellets this week.

Here is the current record:

3/6/2010

3/12/2010

3/18/2010

Today is the 27 and Barnum has not had an owl pellet in 10 days! Now that is a record!

I am not counting one day where he regurgitated toy stuffing only. That happened almost within minutes of him eating the stuffing. The incident occurred between 3/12/2010 and 3/18/2010.

Wow...things are really looking up .  I'm so glad to hear that he's doing better...although sorry to hear about his stuffing issue.  Tell him he's got to take very good care of his babies...well, it's worth a try anyway.

Well, the record has officially fallen as of early this morning. Barnum lasted ten days without an owl pellet. Early this morning he had two. Yikes!

There was an accidental change to his diet, not intentional, yesterday. He napped longer than usual after playing which pushed his feeding time ahead. So I fed him only three times yesterday, 2 cups each, rather than his traditional four times. He does better, obviously, on the four times per day. His tummy is full of food not the ingredients for owl pellets.

Thanks for the comments about my cutie little boy, who is not so little any more, but still as cute as can be. The photo was taken the second day we had Barnum. He posed on hubby's lap and soon fell asleep there. Afterward he climbed over onto my lap for a snooze. You could tell then who he had a liking for the most - me. On mommy's lap, Barnum's mouth is open and he's splayed open on his back completely relaxed.

Barnum has had an unusual amount of owl pellets lately. I am not sure why. His stool appears to be the same. He's getting the same amount of enzymes.

This morning's owl pellet was a hairball. Eek, my puppy is turning into a cat!  MeoW. :D LOL

Two weeks is now the record! Yippee! And the pellet size is half what we have normally found. This is exciting!

4/6/10 was the last one and this one was 4/20/10:)

He is getting better everyday. Along with less often owl pellets and lesser amounts is naturally less scrounging for things to stuff in his mouth. He no longer scours the kitchen floor for food particles. And he doesn't pick up everything on the floor like he used to. And he no longer spends hours in the yard looking for things to put in his mouth.

I took Barnum on an outing this last weekend and there was plenty of things for him to pick off the ground. He wasn't interested. That is a new one for him. Wow! :)

Owl pellet record is broken again.

17 DAYS! YIPPEE!

We'll see if he shatters that record this month as few more days remain and he's about to pass the 17 day mark.

Each time the owl pellets get smaller and he goes longer.

Listen, I am probably going to sound really silly here, and make more of a fool of myself than I did in my robin post earlier.

'Barnum has had an unusual amount of owl pellets lately. I am not sure why. His stool appears to be the same'

What is an Owl pellet?

1)Is it a term used for shape, size of poop,  It took me long enough to know what a tootsie roll was and then I found out it was an American chocolate bar and thats what a good poop should resemble (without the wrapper of course:D)

3) As you've said he's stools are OK, does this mean he's vomiting up 'owl pellets'

2) Barnum is eating Owl poop?

Whatever it is  it would appear he's broken his record so congratulations anyway.

Confused of UK

Hello Confused of UK,

To deal with the everyday stress of Barnum's illness, my husband and I nicknamed Barnum's regurgitation deposits "owl pellets." They are most like the true owl pellets which owls regurgitate. Owl pellets are masses of bone, teeth, hair, feathers and exoskeletons of various animals preyed upon by raptors, or birds of prey. Pellets are produced and regurgitated not only by owls, but by hawks, eagles and other raptors that swallow their prey whole or in small pieces.

For Barnum, these owl pellets are twigs, partially digested small sticks, toy stuffing, dog hair, moss, and/or sometimes grass. He never ate stools.

Instead of having problems with voluminous stools, Barnum presented with regurgitation of undigested food along with his owl pellets (plus several other symptoms). The regurgitation and owl pellets are a result of pica. Although, in the beginning the owl pellets weren't shaped. After we started the enzymes, the owl pellets were shaped like his stomach and we rarely saw any undigested food. They've gotten smaller over time, thankfully. And the length of time between seeing owl pellets has greatly increased too.

Before the enzymes, Barnum would regurgitate all the food he eaten throughout the day, undigested, at the end of each day. And in the middle of that was the pica or as we call it "owl pellet." Then after switching Barnum to grain-free food at 5.5 months it was every three days. After the enzymes, it was every four days followed by five, then six, and so on.

We are now on the 22 day and counting without an owl pellet.

My guess is that when we see no more owl pellets Barnum will be "healed." Meaning, he'll still need enzymes but he'll be stabilized.

The enzymes were started on 2/12/2010.

Here's a website with pictures of owl pellets from a barn owl. You can actually purchase them there. No thanks! I've had enough of those. LOL

http:/www.pelletsinc.com/catalog/pellets.aspx

The only difference between these and Barnum's is the cost. LOL
