My post from earlier today that stated her weight is holding steady was going off the last time I weighed her on the 24th. This means she has not only gained weight for the first time in months but, that she has put on 5 pounds in 3 days! Man I hope this is a healthy sign and not the sign of something else being wrong!!!!

Hi Troy, that's a huge increase, it's great but I didn't know weight could fluctuate to that degree, others may well chime in with their stories. I was happy if Lulu put on half a pound over that time... Craig

Troy,
I don't know about dogs putting on that amount of weight in such a short time but I know I can put on 5 lbs in 3 days! So I guess it's possible...
Don't start torturing yourself by thinking the weight gain could signal something else might be wrong and it's a bad thing. Don't even go there. See it as a positive and Jade is on her way to being healthy.

That does seem like a lot - but gain is good. I would take Jackie once a week to the vet - they had a scale in the lobby - and I would weigh her - they never charged and I wanted to monitor it. Can you do something like that just to track the gain?

Hi Troy~ I agree with Kathy, i too can gain that amount of weight in 3 days! But seriously.... the scale may be slightly off, or she may have drank a lot of water and not expelled it yet prior to your weighing her, or she didn't eliminate yet for the day, or she very well may be feeling better now and is really eating more and absorbing more, etc, etc, etc......... I guess what i am trying to say is that she may not have really gained all of 5 lbs yet..(or maybe she has) and some common occurance may be skewing the actual weight..... but she obviously has gained some weight... and that i would CELEBRATE!!! You also might want to look at the "whole dog"....are the looks of her poop improving yet? If yes, then you need to start celebrating BIG TIME!!!!

I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

Weight gain is GOOD...Well done. At the start Razzy LOST upwards of EIGHT pounds in ten days... so it would be quite possible to GAIN a few pounds quickly too, I would think. It all depends on the dog really... Razzy could lose but was nearly a year before she gained pre EPI weight... but she began dashing around like a ding-bat and burned off everything I put on her. She gained non stop when she got older and more settled. EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT... and that is the truest thing about EPI! Val

-- Val from UK owned by Razzy. diagnosed Oct 2006. stablised with Tryplase capsules and Bakers Complete kibble. Changed to raw diet and Tryplase about Oct 2007. Now serving kibble with Tryplase in morning and raw with Lypex capsules evening and supper...she has her paws round my heart big time. Wouldn't you know it? She LIKES Lypex... but it causes an allergy. She DOESN'T like Tryplase but she is stuck with it! Out with the tempters.... I lost my Razzy with cancer of the spleen 30th June 2011... Rest in peace my love.

Hi Troy,
I would venture to guess it is possible as like Val mentioned, Tara could drop a tremendous amount of weight in a short period of time. That said, you could ask your vet when the last time he had his scales calibrated...
Anyway, congratulations!!!! Upwards is GOOD!!!

Congrats on the weight gain....whatever it is. Up is always preferable for down in the beginning!!!!! As everyone has said every puppy is different. Pharaoh gained 15 lbs. in about 5 weeks, but he also started at a lower weight than Taiko (he was 62 and she was 70). In 5 weeks Taiko has only gained 7 lbs. Even if there is water weight and poop weight as part of it sounds to me like Jade has gained 2 to 3 lbs. min which is great! And focus on the positive, unless other symptoms appear do not worry it means something negative!!!

-- Terry Mom of two EPI Shiloh Shepherds: Pharaoh born Nov. 2007 (dx December 2009) and his older half sister,Taiko born Sept. 2006 (dx June 2010). Pharaoh was 62.4 lbs. when diagnosed in 12/2009 and 10/31/11 his weight was 76.6 and 82.5 lbs on 1/28/12. Received six weeks of B12 shots Jan-Feb 2010 but his B12 on 8/10/2010 was only 232. Taiko's weight was 70.7 lbs. in June 2010 (time of diagnosis) and on 10/31/11 was 80.4 and on 1/28/12 was 84 (2 lbs. over vet's max weight for her). B12 was 211 in June 2010 and 293 on 8/10/10 (after getting weekly shots). Both pups receive B12 shots weekly at home. Both are fed twice a day Costco grain free brand: 2 cups kibble in the morning with 4 crushed tblets and 2 1/2 cups evening with 4 1/2 crushed tablets; plus each meal also get cooked ground turkey (app 1/4 lb. each meal) or half a can of dog food.

Congratulations! I'm always excited to hear about weight gain. Just keep track on her poops so you know that if they are still loose, then it could be a different problem. My Bella gained only a couple pounds after 3 weeks of being on the medicine. Every dog is different though .. Just take it one day at a time and things will start looking up.

Age could be a factor in gaining, too. Kaisa has gained 5 pounds this last week...but she's a young (7 months) and should be gaining at good clip.
Congrats on the weight gain and I hope Jade continues to improve!

I most def jumped the gun with those 5 lbs. Whoever said that it might be water weight or because she hadn't eliminated or both was probably right. She may have gained a pound or two at most. She has been on enzymes for 17 days now and I"m hoping to start visually noticing weight gain. Her energy level has gone up and is acting 'better' but still not much weight gain.

Troy,
Any weight gain is good even a pound or two. Shows you are going in the right direction.

Kathy is right any gain is good.. at the begining I was happy with ounces, let alone pounds..
Because of her itching I have strippied Razzy's coat right down and hacked of the feathers so I can vac right down to her skin and keep her mega clean.
I look now and see a big but rather slim dog yet she weighs 48.85 kgms last weigh in.... it scares me to think what she looked like under her coat when she dropped to 34.4 kgms at the start.
No wonder she couldn't walk a 100yds without crumpling up and lying down.
I'm sure glad that passed.

HI Val~
So how's the queen feeling about having her coat removed??????
My pup get shaved 2-3 times a year because theor hair continously grows... however... everytime they get shaved down... they get real submissive... for about a day ![]()

Hi Troy,
Congrats! Every little tiny bit of weight gain is progress
I found the scales at my vet's office to be somewhat inconsistent... depending on where the dogs feet were placed on the scale and how much the dog squirmed on the scale, the readout could vary by several pounds. And then factoring in if the dog has already been fed or eliminated that day when weighed does throw another variable in also.

Ha, Olesia she was a bit put out at first but I'm sure she feels more comfy now.
Mind you I am no groomer and madam hates to stand still so she looks like she was groomed with a hatchet. ![]()
But it is cooler and more comfy and I keep telling her she is pretty so she doesn't get upset. If I told her she looks a mess she wouldn't be seen dead in town....:P

Val ~
Isn't it funny how they act different when you take their clothes off????
A friend of mine rescued a SWD... and the dog took an "attitude" with her... so she shaved her down and that was the end of the attitude....:D
I guess the one with the shears wins................................................
