I was told by my vet today that my GSD Maple has a tumor on her liver. It is quite large and not sure if it can be operated on without further investigation. We are fully prepared to do surgery if it will improve her quality of life and she won't be in pain not that she looks like she is now. She is full of energy playing with our other dog.

Does anyone know of anything that will help her? I am aware I can't just give her a suppliment and it will be gone but if anyone else has gone through this and knows a type of food that is better for the liver without hindering her EPI or suppliments that will help. I am starting her on Milk Thistle as long as the vet says its ok. She was doing so well with her EPI. She's only 8 yrs old and we aren't ready to let her go just yet.

Thanks!

Hello Kate

I dont know what to say except we are here for you

Has your vet said whether the tumour is primary or metastic? I have come across a web site a while ago which is interesting

http://www.natural-dog-health-remedies.com/liver-cancer-in-dogs.html

there is both diet and other bits of info in there

Dogs live for the moment its us that crack up

I can only hope that your vet can sort something out for you

Please dont give up read as much as you can and ask questions of the vet

Prayers from me Derek and Kara

Oh Kate, I am so sorry to hear this...You'll definatly want a liver friendly diet, but as I've not dealt with this, I've never paid much attention to it...

Is you vet consulting with a surgeon on this?  I'm keeping you and Maple in my thoughts and prayers.

Dear Kate,

I am sorry you are going through this.  I do not have experience with this, but there must be others (other Forums?) who have dealt with liver issues.  You and Maple and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.  I would also get a couple of opinions on the surgery.

Please let us know how you are doing with this.

Oh Kate...I am so so sorry to hear this.......your heart must be breaking.  I am not sure if this will help or not...maybe chat with your vet about theses......  but others who have had dogs with cancers (although i do not remember what kinds of cancers) have touted diets by Jean Dodd... and of course, Monica Segal.....so maybe these "liver cancer diets" will help Maple have a little better quality of life....here are some links for you ...But in the meantime... please PLEASE keep us posted and if your ned to just chat, we are here for you.... you and Maple are and always will be family!

Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the kind words. Maple was rushed into surgery today for a spleenectomy since the mass had over taken it after we gave her an ultrasound. Glad it was that and not the liver. The vet allowed me in the operating room to watch.

Maple is doing ok at the vets as of now and the mass has been sent off to find out if its benign or not.Hoping for a full recovery. I did get a lot of useful info for anyone else who may go through this same ordeal.

Hi Kate,

Sending you and Maple lots of positive energy - I hope that it's all good news from now on. It's so nice that you were there with her during the surgery - she must have known you were near.

Mahi, the Indian EPI dog, diagnosed at 10 months, now 3 years old. Was 60 lbs, went down to 46 lbs, but now with YOUR help inching towards 59 lbs. Fed 3 times a day - homecooked diet of 1 kg potatoes, 70 gms lentils, 150 gms tapioca, squash, beetroot, carrots mashed together, 2 boiled eggs and 500 ml yoghurt. Since 1st Dec '11 have begun to gradually add TOTW Pacific Stream, pre-softened in hot water with the home-cooked food. 1 Salmon Omega 3 tablet given per day. 1 tablet of Creon 10K given 20 mins before every meal. Very, very active - knock on wood, and seems to have gone from a level 10 of "hungry" to maybe an 8. On 27th July 2011, officially downgraded "hungry" level to 7.
