I am sorry I have been missing so long...health problems...gardens (big ones)... Razzy and bad hips..etc.

I just popped in to update you on Razzy.

She has been refusing food on and off for a few days and I put it down to the unusual hot and humid weather.

Yesterday she became tired and didn't want to go anywhere or do anything much.

Last night she was panting really bad and still panting this morning.. I phoned the vet and took her in and she walked to the car as though she could hardly make it.

Good news... her heart seems strong... there doesn't feel like any tummy trouble (at least none they could feel)

Bad new... she has suddenly become very aneamic and that is why she feels weak. There are a few reasons it could be either her marrow bone is not making red blood cells... there could be a bleeding tumour somewhere... or it could be cancer of the blood... or auto-immune where the white cells are killing red cells.

They have kept her in to do blood tests and try to find out what is going on... I should have more idea what we are up against later today.

Please spare a few prayer that it is something they can treat.

Love you all

Val

The vet just phoned and the results of the in-house blood test is her red blood cell count should be 45%... its down to 17% and that is dangerously low. They are going to xray and then put her on a drip.

The lab results should be back at 3,30pm our time and we will know more.... DAMN!

Hi Val,

Is she bloated at all? I mean, I know it's hard to tell with all that fur, but does she seem to be building fluid in her abdomen?  Let us know what the x-rays reveal.

I lost Zeke a few months ago to a fast moving Lmphoma and I remember too well how scarey of a time this is...

Hugs,

The vet phoned again and the xray showed fluid round the spleen... she has drained the area and there was a lot of blood and the spleen was full of water and bubbles. We have only ONE chance and that is for the vet to operate and if its only the spleen that is involved she will remove the organ, that may buy a bit of time for Razzy (if she survives the opp)... without the opp our girl will die.

I am sitting by the phone as from now because if there is bad damage internally they will phone and ask if we will let her go to the bridge.

My heart goes out to you .... I don't know you, but it sounds like you've kept Razzy healthy and happy for years following her EPI dx, so you obviously take very good care of her.  Please remember you've done what's best for Razzy no matter what happens.

Mom to Pixie, 6 year old sheltie, inherited from my mother-in-law 3/11.  Dx of EPI 9/09.  TLI in 10/09 was 0.4 ug/L.  As of 12/2/11, Folate fasting levels was 13.6 ug/L, and Cobalamin fasting was 615.   Current weight 18.6 lbs (4/12), ideal weight around 17 - we're trying to keep her from gaining more!  Feeding grain free - Natural Balance canned lamb and Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Lamb kibble.  Giving slightly less than 1/2 tsp Pancreatin 8X per 1/2 cup of food.  Tylan currently 1x/day.  Also takes 1/2 tablet pepcid for stomach upset 2x/day.  Fortiflora probiotics 8/15/11, one packet daily.  Getting bi-weekly B-12 shots.  Our little pack also includes my husband, our 11 year old sheltie, Lucy, and our 8 year old sheltie, Einstein.

Dear Val,

I am so sorry to hear about Razzy.  I am lighting a candle for her (and you) this morning and waiting to hear about the surgery.  This has to be so painful for you.  I know that spleens can be removed successfully and animals and people can live without them.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hugs to you.

Oh Val, I'm so sorry to hear this and am now praying hard for Razzy.  She can certainly do without her spleen.  If she does have immune mediated anemia and/or thrombocytopenia then her spleen can be very enlarged from that.  Our Ayla had that but they opted not to remove the spleen.  Peace and strength Val and best thoughts for Razzy.

My Razzy is gone.

she had bad cancer of the spleen even then the opp might have saved her but she was too weak to survive the strain on her heart.

I'll be back when my heart stops breaking
