Hello all

i got admitted as an emergency with severe abdominal pains last Thursday 22 Dec

evenytually i got allocated a bed next to Rose who has suffered EPI for years

anyway she got interrogated as you can imagine and it was very interesting

she has now had her pancreas removed as she had a cyst on it and all she has left is the tail

she had all the symptoms our pups have the slimy yellow poo and the rumbling tum the massive weight loss etc before it was dx

the docs said it was gastro enteritis for a long time so docs are crap as well

anyway she has to watch her diet she cant have dairy food and struggles with grains and bread

she tells me she takes one Creon before each meal or any food really, and I cannot believe how like Lypex they are

the most interesting thing was her explanation of how she feels

she sald that before dx her stomach and belly felt as if it were in knots and the pain was similar to a severe period pain which moved downwards all the time she said the feeling of wind was attrocious and it came out of both ends and on some days found it hard to stand up and the motions just flooded out and her back was as she put it broke with pain

if she forgets to take her Creon she is in severe discomfort and obviously has diarreah she also takes antibiotics daily and metagenics b12 folate intrisic  every day

if she forgets her antibiotics she is in real trouble so basically she doesnt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! she is laid up in bed if she does with griping pains

does any of this sound familiar????

i hope this gives you an insite to what our babies feel

i was totally transfixed

she said she was massively depressed which you can imagine so i see this is a whole new light

anyway they discharged me today thank god

have to have more tests though

jxxxxx

Hello Jean, so sorry to read you were so crook as to be hospitalised! hope you're feeling much better soon and there's no recurrance. i think you deserve to be mentioned in dispatches though for continuing the quest for EPI knowledge even on you sick bed! And that is amazing, I can't help thinking it would be like being able to actually interview one of our dogs (and some of the best people I know are dogs :D

However, I sincerely hope your ward buddy resists the urge to post any pictures of her poop on this forum. I believe they have special websites for that type of thing :P

Very interesting, Jean! Thanks for sharing. No wonder Maya was so GROUCHY before her diagnosis.

Really hope you are feeling better and that the tests aren't too invasive or painful. Get well!

So sorry you were ill, but glad you are back with us.  Could it be that the pain is just like that for our dogs?  It breaks my heart to think that Kain and the rest of our EPI family of dogs went through that and still go through that.  Then I felt guilty cause I did not think of your "roomie" first... Anyway, It is so sad that dogs can't speak and we need to be such good detectives to find out what is wrong with them, blood tests, tweeking enzymes, searching websites.... all for the love they give us, priceless.

Dear Jean, I hope you are well again soon and it is nothing serious.  What a total bummer being in over Christmas and not being able to eat all the choc and biscuits the nurses would have at the desk!  You know, right before Cedar was diagnosed we engaged an animal communicator to have a chat with her and Bree as we were having some issues with them and wanted to understand what was going on.  One of the things she reported to us from Cedar was that her tummy was sore all the time.  That was before the cow pies started but she was gassy and had lots of softish poop.  How interesting to hear it from a human directly too.  Thanks for sharing that and please be well and let us know if we can help direct prayers or energy to your healing.

Cripes Jean... what have you been doing to yourself?

I told you not to go climbing trees at your age, didn't I?

If Kara gets stuck up a tree you call the Fire Brigade....!!!!!

Seriously though, I'm so glad you are back home and make sure you rest properly... its early here at the moment but when I've fed and exercised this pit-pony of mine I will sort round for your number and give you a ring, OK?

It sure does make you feel for the dogs when a humna tell it how it is, doesn't it?

The thing with dogs is they are so brave and never really let you know how they feel.

Talk to you later, hon... just look after yourself.

Jean - so sorry to hear you're not feeling well.  At least you're out of the hospital, and hopefully over the worst of it.  I hope they get things figured out for you soon.

What a coincidence to be roomed with an EPI person!  That was very interesting information.

Mom to Pixie, 6 year old sheltie, inherited from my mother-in-law 3/11.  Dx of EPI 9/09.  TLI in 10/09 was 0.4 ug/L.  As of 12/2/11, Folate fasting levels was 13.6 ug/L, and Cobalamin fasting was 615.   Current weight 18.6 lbs (4/12), ideal weight around 17 - we're trying to keep her from gaining more!  Feeding grain free - Natural Balance canned lamb and Nature's Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Lamb kibble.  Giving slightly less than 1/2 tsp Pancreatin 8X per 1/2 cup of food.  Tylan currently 1x/day.  Also takes 1/2 tablet pepcid for stomach upset 2x/day.  Fortiflora probiotics 8/15/11, one packet daily.  Getting bi-weekly B-12 shots.  Our little pack also includes my husband, our 11 year old sheltie, Lucy, and our 8 year old sheltie, Einstein.

Oh Jean... i am so sorry to hear that you were ill and in the hospital... i sure hoipe you are feeling better now.  What a lousy way to spend Christmas :(........... you better take care of yourself and get back to 100% sooner rather than later!!!

We missed you but i just assumed you were away for the holidays... with family and friends... not doctors and nurses.....

What a coincidence to share a room with  a human with EPI !!!!  So..... did you ask her to join the FORUM??????   SHe is more than welcome here and we would greatly appreciate her insight!

When we see pictures of dogs when they are first diagnosed with EPI... they usually have this real sad (although now, we might have to change that to "painful" ) look on their face... and then when folks take pictures of them after they have been on the enzymes for a while... it is amazing how their facial expression has changed... and my old vet told me a long time ago.... that EPI hurts... i never asked him how he knew.... but it just made sense.

WIshing you a much healthier New Year!!!!

And thanks so much for sharing this with us.... really interesting!

Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

Hi Jean,

I am just catching up with your thread and your recent stay in the hospital.:(  I hope you are feeling better (thank heaven for probations!) and get results soon.   There seems to be a lot of this going on.   My stepchildren's mom was taken to the ER on Christmas Eve with severe abdominal pains......turns out it was her gall bladder, and she is having it removed this Wednesday.

Please take care of yourself and be good on probation.   We will be thinking of you.

That was an amazing story about your room mate in the hospital.   You must feel like EPI is following you everywhere!

Hugs.

Hello Jean,

I am sorry to hear of you being in the hospital over Christmas. :(  I hope you won't have any further problems from it.

I was just trying to read more of the site and learn more and came across your post. I'm not sure if I'm glad for reading it or not. Our poor babies. :(  I feel just terrible, imagining my Ryker in pain like that. He never really let me know, either. i'm just thankful I had the sense not to punish him when he got so bad he started pooping in the house -- I'd feel all the worse now if I had compounded it.

Maybe that's what his sadness was ... pain. Poor babies, all of them. I HATE for any of my animals (or anyone else's) to be sick.

--

Ryker, GSD, 2 years old December 2011. Have started feeding homemade. Due to possible allergies we're not giving much variety yet, but right now his meal (fed 3x a day) is 1-1/2 cups chopped raw chicken legs, thighs, or quarters with bone (or sometimes rabbit), 3 eggs (chicken and/or duck), and 1-1/2 cups steamed veggies (mostly white potato, some sweet potato, small amounts of carrots and broccoli). To this I add water to make it warm, and 3/4 teaspoon 8x pancreatin, incubate for 20 minutes. He also gets a chicken liver about every other day.  In response to suggestions, I'm going to try separating the eggs and making his egg portion mostly whites (for lowered fat intake) and cooking them (so they don't interfere with vitamin B absorption). He also gets a B-12 cap every other day, and powdered Solid Gold vitamins in his food. We're still new at this, so I'm sure more changes are coming. I put a summary of his background on my “About me.”

Hello Jean,

I am sorry you have to go back to the hospital.   Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.   I  have a candle lighted for you....sending you healing light and love.

I send you one of my favorite poems by one of my favorite poets, Hafiz, to comfort you. If the format doesn't take, I will send it to you privately.

                                                             And Love Says

                                                                And love

                                                                  Says,

"I will, I will take care of you,"

                                                       To everything that is

                                                                Near.

Hugs to you.
