Hello everyone! I have fabulous news! My sister, and Mahi's "other" mother, has just been offered a full scholarship by the University of Western Australia in Perth to pursue a PhD in English Literature! We are all terribly excited and proud for her and for a girl who grew up in a small town in the Himalayan foothills, this is a big achievement indeed. I asked Olesia, and she was very sweet to encourage me to post about it, so thank you Olesia. Since this is completely unchartered territory for us, we'd be very grateful if anyone who is in Perth, or in Australia, to help us figure a few things out. And from our family to yours, a Happy New Year! May it bring you all much cheer and good fortune and lots of laughs and happiness! Devika

-- Mahi, the Indian EPI dog, diagnosed at 10 months, now 3 years old. Was 60 lbs, went down to 46 lbs, but now with YOUR help inching towards 59 lbs. Fed 3 times a day - homecooked diet of 1 kg potatoes, 70 gms lentils, 150 gms tapioca, squash, beetroot, carrots mashed together, 2 boiled eggs and 500 ml yoghurt. Since 1st Dec '11 have begun to gradually add TOTW Pacific Stream, pre-softened in hot water with the home-cooked food. 1 Salmon Omega 3 tablet given per day. 1 tablet of Creon 10K given 20 mins before every meal. Very, very active - knock on wood, and seems to have gone from a level 10 of "hungry" to maybe an 8. On 27th July 2011, officially downgraded "hungry" level to 7.

Congrats to your sister and your whole family. That is quite an accomplishment. Full rides are few and far between in the U.S. now-a-days, I am not sure if that is the case there, but it is certainly something to be very proud of. I hope mahi won't miss her too much! I am sure that she will miss Mahi though. Never been to Perth or Australia for that matter, but we do have a few resident Aussies on here and I am sure they would be more than happy to fill you and her in on the area. Wish her a safe trip and well wishes from Kain and Nicole in Pennsylvania!

Hello Devika and a huge congratulations to Mahi's OM and family!! What a fantastic achievement! And how exciting. Actually Perth is the one capital in Australia I haven't been too (yet). We're in South Australia (Adelaide is the capital) and Perth is the western-most city in the country! Some 2,700km away but then Oz is a big place and we tend not to bother too much with distances in general so you could say we're next door ;-) Actually I may be in Perth next year sometime depending upon which way the wind blows which would be jolly. We do have a member in Perth but haven't heard from her for a while. I have some family there who would be delighted to say g'day I'm sure What a jolly end to the a year where you fought and got your precious pupper back and an auspicious start for her Other Mother in the new one! How exciting. Craig

Thank you all so much! Craig I've messaged Adeline - thank you for the link and also for your help. My sister is researching how the internet has changed the way we look at the world, what we read, how we read, how we interact with each other, and even how the whole writer-reader dynamic and viewer-producer/director dynamic has changed. Every time I read her work it reminds me of epi4dogs - the internet has worked to help so many puppers and I, for one, will be forever grateful. Devika

Hi Devika, Wow, what a fantastic opportunity for your sister. I'm sure you're all very proud of her. I have only just seen this, so sorry for coming in late here. Craig, as usual, has been a fantastic help & especially since he has some family living in Perth. Whatever would we do without you here Craig???? We refuse to let you go awol again. Unfortunately I don't know how much help I can be to you as we are in Melbourne & that's on the opposite side of the country. A very long way away from Perth but if there is anything at all I can do to help, then I will be very happy to do so.

WOWEEEEE! Congratulations! That is a brilliant peice of news and I know your sister will do wonderfully well... even if she misses her 'other child' the lovely Mahi. You are so right about the internet, it has opened a window on the world and we are like neighbours now. Such a change for me after being born just after World War Two and growing up in a very basic world... I still remember the milk and coal (and beer) being delivered by horse and cart... that seems crazy now. For my part the internet is mind-blowing and very, very wonderful. Val

What a tremendous accomplishment! Many Congrats to her Devika. What an exciting adventure and as you've said technology will make that distance seem less. Do you have Skype there? I chat with a friend in Kenya over Skype and it's free!

A huge congratulations to your sister, Devika--and to your whole family! Looks like the New Year is bringing you lots of "new" already. You will love skype to help you bridge the great distance. We use it quite often as my extended family is all over the US. It is amazing! It will help your sister keep up with Mahi's progress too. Mahi's OM is going to be missing her, but she will be having so many adventures. How exciting! Barb

Ah... the 'good old days... they were not always so good. With sadness I remember the many times a poor horse fell on the icy roads and the whole neighbourhood would rally round. All the men were called out from where they worked and would release the poor animal from the cart and help lift it back on its feet... or more sadly have to have it shot because of injury. Some things were good though... nearly all food was local and tasted good... we did only have open fires which were cosy but not as dependable as central heating. We got used to the cold pretty much and were hardy, especially where I grew up in the poor part of the inner city. I seem to remember using an umbrella to go to bed when it rained because the roof leaked... and most things were secondhand or hand-me-downs. No TV until I was about 10 years old and for a long time no electric... just gass for lighting and cooking... history does not catch up so quickly in the poor areas. So you can see why I appreciate much of the modern world although I still have a Raburn for wood and smokless coal because I like it, but we have the central heating to fall back on. I still grow my veg and run the garden on compost that I make. It was part of running the smallholding and part of producing our own meat and veg and eggs and goats milk for about 30 years.... and I make my own jam from my fruit and my own home made wine for the family....some old habits die hard.
