Hi Diane, Most manufacturers that have grain free dog food have grain free cat food if they are also in the cat food business. We have to keep protein levels down for our oldest cat with renal issues so our cats currently eat a mix of Now! Grain free adult (turkey, duck, salmon protein base) kibble (protein is one of the lowest at 31%) and Welless grain free canned (a variety of protein sources...we use turkey/salmon, chicken/herring, sardine/crab/herring). Have no clue about antibiotic dosing, sorry.

Hey Diane..... Butter weighs about 7 lbs now and we have her a 1/4 tablet of Metro, twice daily.... I would guess if done by weight it would be the same. Dunno about the Tylan yet...... There are several grain free foods made by the same manufacturers that make the dog food.....we have our cat on one but I can't remember which it is....

Thanks that should help her get started. She was going to contact the vet today and ask for a copy of the test results so we can actually determine if b12 and SIBO are an issue but from the symptoms it is. Tummy rumbling, poor appetite, loose stools, gas, vomiting. I have never owned a cat so i have no idea all I know is they have all those different flavors of canned foods that I would have no idea where to start. The poor kitty is 6 pounds down from 10 and only eats a few tablespoons at a time. Currently on 1/2 viokase tablet per meal. We discussed this dose probably is not high enough. I did find an email from a cat owner that told me he creates a slurry in a syringe with cat food and enzymes and wraps the cat in a towel to get it in her before she goes to the regular bowl to eat dry food. He said that was working well for them even if she was not fond of the proceedure. I would have no clue where to start. I am hoping she will pop into the forum and get more ideas and I know there are some cat owners out there that can help her too. She is in Canada

Hi Diane, It's strange to think about my cats having EPI, but I'm trying to get my head there in case I can help. When Cedar was started on viokase, we didn't have much luck with it until we crushed it and incubated the food by mixing it in, just like we do now with the powdered enzymes. Even so, we didn't have much luck and she was up to 7-8 tabs/meal and it was brutally expensive. Do you know if this person is crushing and mixing? I would do it with my cats as I do with Cedar's...mix the enzyme in with the kibble with warm water and mix the wet food in before serving, but after incubating. Otherwise the wet food would go liquidy and be nasty, I would think. My biggest cat only gets 1/8 c kibble 2 x daily, mixed with about 1 1/2 tbsp wet, so if the enzyme ratio is the same, maybe looking at 1/4 tsp 6 X to that amount of food. It would be good if they would join and start a thread.

Sorry, the main experience we have of cats is seeing how fast they can run Here's a Tylan guide though... 13kg / 30 lb - 1/8 tsp 27kg / 60 lb - 1/4 tsp 41kg / 90 lb - 3/8 tsp 54kg/ 120 lb - 1/2 tsp
Recommended dosage is 10-20mg per kilo (2.2lb) so a 6 pound moggy would need 27-54mg and you'd need a cheap set of microscales. Craig

Diane.... cats with EPI are treated pretty much like dogs but with some differences. CAts with EPI need to be treated for B12 deficiency also... I als just read tonight from a 2007 research report from: P. Watson, Department of Veterinary Medicine, University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK.
that "Cats with EPI are often best managed on a hypoallergenic intestinal type diet as there is a high incidence of concurrent inflammatory bowel disease." .... this EPI + IBD connection in cats popped up in a few other research reports on treating cats with EPI....so it might be something to consider.

Wow, I just feel bad for them. I have a kitty I love just as much as Ryker ... this cat has seen me through some rough times. She was never very healthy, and it turns out that she has asthma along with some other not so serious problems. She was never above 6 pounds either, until I got her diagnosed. I started keeping her with me 24/7 instead of in with the other cat (they had their own room at night) and she had to have a couple courses of prednisone. She's 9-1/2 pounds now, less than a year later, but I still have to watch her breathing. When I read cats could get EPI too, that just makes me so sad. They can be so much pickier about food, I wonder if the chances of them rejecting incubated food is very high? I can see syringing a slurry down them if needed. I was fortunate that Crystal LOVES LOVES LOVES tuna with all her heart, so any time I need to medicate her, I can add it to a bit of tuna and tuna juice and she will eat it before she realizes the meds are in there. I don't know about enzymes though, since cats prefer to visit their kibble throughout the day and have many small meals. I can imagine it would be harder to manage, and nearly impossible if you have more than one cat, since they are probably going to have to learn to eat regular meals instead. I hope they get the help they need and the cat does well.

-- Ryker, GSD, 2 years old December 2011. Have started feeding homemade. Due to possible allergies we're not giving much variety yet, but right now his meal (fed 3x a day) is 1-1/2 cups chopped raw chicken legs, thighs, or quarters with bone (or sometimes rabbit), 3 eggs (chicken and/or duck), and 1-1/2 cups steamed veggies (mostly white potato, some sweet potato, small amounts of carrots and broccoli). To this I add water to make it warm, and 3/4 teaspoon 8x pancreatin, incubate for 20 minutes. He also gets a chicken liver about every other day. In response to suggestions, I'm going to try separating the eggs and making his egg portion mostly whites (for lowered fat intake) and cooking them (so they don't interfere with vitamin B absorption). He also gets a B-12 cap every other day, and powdered Solid Gold vitamins in his food. We're still new at this, so I'm sure more changes are coming. I put a summary of his background on my “About me.”

hello there
dont know how i missed this thread
i had a cat with epi back in the 1980's treated at the time with tryplase one per day we just gave her the capsule and believe it or not she ate it
the vet was convinced she knew what she needed
we were lucky he had just graduated from vet school so he knew what he was talking about as epi as that time was a grey area and the ctli had not been thought of
his thing was gastroenterology
remembering what she was like convinced me kara had the same you do not forget the smell !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by the way it was dx by xray film believe it or not at that time
i had a blackboard discussion with uncle ian my vet on the subject a while ago he was a colleage of David Williams who did the assay on ctli and wondered where he had gone to
she was dx at 8yrs old and she was 20 when we lost her so there you go.
my thoughts would be to go with the same weight criteria as a small dog would have and treat in much the same way as them
definitely you will need a few towels as the claws get very nasty but some tuna or salmon paste and i am sure the enzymes and antis will go down

Hi everyone, I am Sarah a new member here to this forum. And my cat Coco is in need of help. I appreciate all of your feedback and suggestions ont his forum that Diane had started. My kitty has been ill for about a year now, after many blood tests and check ups with no answers, I began doing alot of research online. I finally discovered that Coco could possioble have pancreas issues. I demanded her previous vet to test for pancreas "enzyme" levels (CPLI test) and she tested positive for "Pancreatitis". The vet said that all I can do is put her on a low fat diet, no medication was an option. I changed her diet many times, nothing worked. I even tried low fat, grain free food dry and or wet. Her symptoms were lose of weight, vomitting, foul smelling stool (diharrea) and rumbling noises from her stomach, big loss of appetite. As time went on, her appetite was back and now meows for food every 2 hours after being fed 1/2 of a 5.5ounce can of wet food. I changed vets, and had her blood work transferred over and her new vet thinks based on new symptoms that she probably had chronic pancreatits which has lead to EPI. So he prescribed Clavaseptin (antibiotic) for bacteria and viokase (digestive enzymes) pills. He said no more than half a pill of viokase per day. After not beaing able to trust my previous vet, I researched online to discover that a cat needs 1/2 to 1 tablet minimum per meal, EVERY meal. I increaed it to hallf a pill each meal and not noticing an improvement with any of her symptoms. So i did more research and found this site, which I am so thankful that I did. After reading more about EPI on this site, I have learned that my cat probably needs a stronger dose of digestive enzymes, she might have SIBO and might also be low on B12. I have ordered the Pancreatin and hope to notice an improvement. My cat Coco seems to be in a lot of discomfort, she sits alot of times hunched and not flat on her tummy. My vet prescribed 11 days of Tylosin ONLY for possible SIBO, but wont prescribe me 30 days worth until i do blood work and check up again even if there is signs that the anti's are working. His reasoning is that he is already "stretching" out his license by treating her based on symptoms only, without proof. Blood work and check is $300 and I cannot afford it at this time I wish he would have prescribed Tylosin for bacteria a month ago instead of 3 weeks of Clavaseptin. He is another vet without much EPI/Pancreatitis knowledge. Diane was explaining to me that Tylan pwder is similar to Tylosin anti"s, however I am not sure where I can purchase it, that will ship to Canada. Hoping someone knows of how or where I can get it here? My kitty needs more that 11 days worth that her vet prescribed, as I have learned it takes 30 days to kill all bacteria? As far as B12, my vet wont prescribe the shots either without check up/bloodwork, but have been told I can give her B12 folate intrinsic pills that humans take, but not sure what the dosage would be for my 6 pound cat for Tylan powder or B12 human supplement? I know most of you are dog owners, but if u have any insight as to how I should go about helping my kitty, I'd greatly appreciate it. Sorry for the lenghty post.
Thank you again, Sarah and Coco

Sara and Coco... welcome to our EPI family but so SO sorry that you have to be here. To answer your questions.... 1. You can order the Tylan (Tylosin) from Amazon.com (Tylan Soluble Powder 100 gram)
The typical dosage for cats can vary between 2.5 mg to 5 mg per pound and should be administered every 12 hours, according to PetPlace.com THere is no accurate test for proof for SIBO..... when they test the blood for B12 levels, there is a Folate result that simply "indicates" whether the animal "may" have SIBO..... but the presence of SIBO is ultimately determined by "symptoms" and the underlying cause of the ailment: ✔ The best way to assess SIBO is by symptoms and accompanying medical ailment, in this case EPI, and treat immediately for best results. Unfortunately, Folate test results, Culturing and Counting bacterial numbers, and Duodenal juice collection all have majors flaws in their technique rendering them inaccurate indications of SIBO. Recent studies have determined that it is not the number of bacteria but rather “the type of flora and/or how the host and flora interact that are more important than numbers.” 2. Regarding the B12... the better solution is for you to give injectible B12 (generic)... but it doesn't sound like your vet is willing to work with you :(- -we often tell our members to ask the vet to show them how to give the B12 injection (to save money) and the vet also prescribes the proper dosage. Since the B12 pills with intrinsic factor do work with many (but not all) EPI dogs, i am "guessing" it might work for cats also... but i do not understand why you are being told that he will not give the B12 shots but that it is okay for you to give B12 pill??????? Maybe you should consider looking for another vet? for cats that need B12, the injectible dosing rate is: Animal Bodyweight Range Dose/injection cats, dogs up to 5 kg (10 lb) 250 µg Most generic cobalamin preparations are 1mg/ml, i.e. 1000µg/m. Regarding the B12 pills with intrinsic factor..... Metagenics Intrinisi B12/Folate is 800mcg... my "guess" is that you would be able to only give 1/8 of a pill... but again... this is just a guess... you really need to check with a pharmacists....... I have a Cat EPI section on this website http://www.epi4dogs.com/catsgetepitoo.htm i'll see if i can dig up some more information on how to manage cats with EPI....

in addition to what is tyoed above and onthe cat with EPI page...this is what the vet journals say about treating cats with EPI: What are the dietary recommendations for cats with EPI? It is best to divide daily intake in at least two or three meals to reduce dietary overload and osmotic diarrhea. Ensure you add the enzyme supplementation to each meal and mix thoroughly. The diet should have high diet palatability and energy density, contain normal levels of fat (which protects the enzymes, provides energy as well as palatability), adequate levels of high quality protein and contain some fermentable fiber. Vitamin Supplementation Cats with EPI Cats with EPI with or without concurrent small intestinal disease may also have low serum folate concentrations and should be treated with oral folate at 400 μg once daily for 2 - 4 weeks or longer, until serum levels have normalized. Malabsorption of fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, D, E and K) may occur in EPI, although the clinical importance in cats is unknown. Cats with evidence of a coagulopathy should be supplemented with vitamin K. It may also be helpful to increase dietary vitamin E levels because of its antioxidant function, especially in cats that do not respond to enzymes and supportive management alone and especially in cats with concurrent diseases.
***Be very careful about administering any fat soluble vitamins to any animal without first checking with a vet to determine the proper dosage... THe B vitamins are water soluble, so, if there is no such thing as over-dosing.....if you give too much, they will just pee it out... however... vitamins such as A, D, E, and K are fat soluble vitamins.... that should only be given in the correct dosage as they are stored in the body and if you give too much it can cause serious problems.

Thank you SO much for your quick replies. The information you have provided was very very helpful. I am going to order tylan from Amazon.com
My vet did not "ok" B12 supplements and he will not give or provide B12 injections without another recent check up and bloodwork ($300) I am thinking of ordering B12 with folate intrinsic factor (human use) but dont know the dose to give my cat. I"m so frustrated that my vet will not work with me, as I have read that there is no actual definitive test for SIBO and usually treated by symptoms alone. Not sure why he supplied me with 11 days worth of tylosin if SIBO needs 30 days to be treated? I should be getting my order of Pancreatin tomorrow, if not Thursday the latest. The plan is to give her tylan (twice a day, every 12 hours) and pancreatin with every meal. If no improvement, i will add the B12 intrinsic. Since I am not sure if she is low. Or maybe I should do all three (tylan, pancreatin enzymes and B12)? As far as her appetite, I have cut out her dry food because I heard wet food is easier to digest? Maybe that is why she is more hungry the last few days, since she is getting less carbs? So I bought a coffee grinder to grind her dry food and mix it with her wet. Hopefully that does the trick Looking forward to your reply,

I have checked out the tylan powder on Amazon and Ebay and even with priority mail, it takes 7-10 business days for delivery. I will be out of the (11days) worth of tylosin my vet prescribed me before I receive the Tylan powder shipment and the vet wont prescribe anymore tylosin until i spend over $300 for check up and bloodwork. What should I do for the days inbetween when i have no antibiotic? Will she become resistant to the antibiotic if she is off the medicine and back on it days later? Will this harm her if she is on it then off it for a few days? Im really starting to worry and panic.

Hi Sarah, welcome to you a Coco. No need to panic. It would be ideal to be able to continue the tylosin uninterrupted but it's not the end of the world. She won't become resistant that fast and most of our dogs are on again off again depending on their symptomatology. The correct tylosin dose will be on the bottle you have from your vet. What does it say? Then you just have to figure out how much powder equals that dose and you can make up your own capsules. I live just north of Toronto. We purchase our generic injectible B12 from Costco without a prescription. Now our vet was happy to show us how to inject it properly and also provides us with free needles and syringes so I'm not sure if you can purchase those online or elsewhere...probably. Our vet is just north of Toronto in Aurora, not sure where you are. And Cedar's eye vet is in Toronto and his son (cousin to one of our vets) just finished his internal medicine specialty and might see you if you're interested in switching vets. They were terrific with Cedar and not horribly expensive considering they did a specialist consult, a minor surgery and gave her some meds. There will for sure be initial costs to switching, but I know my vet would show you how to inject the B12 and suspect the other would also so if you have to invest some more it might be worth having a chat with one of them to see how they would be willing to support you in the future rather than paying a vet that seems to not be willing to do much to support you long term. Our vet is listed in the Recommended vets section. I bet they don't have cat EPI experience, but they're terrific and not put off by needed to consult with others that have more experience. We also have 3 cats, none with EPI though. I think you could still feed kibble if Coco will eat it. I think I would incubate the kibble with enzymes and water first then mix in the canned wet food. Kibble is more calorie dense than wet food, so will help her gain her weight back faster if you can get her to eat it soaked in enzymes. I know you're getting pancreatin, but since you have viokase now, have you tried crushing it and mixing it in? Cedar was on viokase first too and we had no luck with it at all until we did that on the advice of folks here on the Forum. How is Coco's last weight and is she still losing?

Just a note of caution. Cats metabolize things very differently than dogs so I don't think taking dosing recommendations etc that are intended for dogs and adjusting based on Coco's weight is the safest thing to do. I would want verification of appropriate CAT dosing/treatment from a vet, either directly or from good source published guidelines. Olesia's great at finding info and is on the hunt for you so chin up! Soon you'll be our resident cat expert; I'm glad you joined the Forum. In the meantime we'll help as best we can. Hi Ceder, Thank you for the welcome. I am so glad to find this site, it gives me and coco lots of hope
My vet prescribed Tylosin 50mg capsules. Not sure what the dose is when you compare it to the tylan powder form? How long should I give this to her, 30 days? How much Pancreatin powder do you suggest for each meal for Coco? She is stable at 6 pounds, she use to be a pudgy 13 pounds. The B12 you get from costco is for human use? Maybe i should try B12 supplements with intrinsic factor? Not sure what the dose would be for her. I am grinding her dry food in a coffee bean grinder and mixing it with wet food, viokase pill powder (until i get my pancreatin) and warm water, sitting for 20mins before feeding it to her. This seems to be more filling for her. Instead of her meowing every 2 hours for food, its about 5-6 hours between feedings. She has not vomitted since her tylosin anti's but still very soft stool. It's only been 3 days on the tylosin so her improvement is still very encouraging If you could private message me with the recommended vets and their contact information I'd greatly appreciate it, I am definately switching vets and in need for a more competant one.

Hi Sarah, Cedar's our EPI dog, my name's Barb. I'll follow up with a private email too. The B12 we use for Cedar and it would be fine for Coco if you want to do injections. We give Cedar's weekly. According to Olesia's dosing info, if you were using the same B12 as us, you would give Coco 0.25 cc = 250 ug/micrograms, so 1 cc syringes would be fine. The dose of Tylosin you need is 50 mg. All the capsules are is powder put in a capsule. Lots of folks on here capsule their own powder. We just buy ours from the vet because it's easier in terms of time. I don't know how much of the powder equals a 50 mg dose. I'm not sure you can get it into Canada with online order either but we haven't tried as we always get it from our vet. Maybe some other Canuck has more experience and will pipe in. Are you grinding the kibble because Coco prefers it that way? Otherwise I don't think you need to. What amount and type of food are you feeding Coco at each meal. The dosing of pancreatin and all enzymes is a ratio to the amount of food eaten. The usual starting ratio is 1 tsp 6 x pancreatin to 1 cup food, so if you feed Coco 1/4 c food each meal the amount of enzyme to mix in would be 1/4 tsp.
