Maezi is looking not well this morning . I have now noticed some swelling/ puffiness on her nose and jaw. Not sure what - if she may have gotten into something. She been off ruling since sat morn . She is alert. It started about 1/2 hour ago her nose.

Yes I called vet and we think she must have been bitten by most likely a spider - the swelling is really bad and I will be taking her in now .

Let us know what the vet says.  I was going to say maybe she has an infected tooth before I read that your vet thought maybe a spider.  We don't deal with too many spiders here (except the tiny ones in my basement).   Glad you are getting it checked out, you can never be too careful.

HI Wanda... as i was reading your post... spider bite popped into my head because that is what happened to my neighbor's dog.....sounded kind of like what you were describing...they had to put the dog on drugs (don't remember what kind) but i do remember that the swelling did not go down right away...it took quite a few days before the dog was feeling well again.  Hopefully Maezi will get better real soon.

HOpe you let us know what the vet says!

Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

:)maezi is home doing better

OMG what a scare ! she was fine when she woke up she had her head under our bed as she likes to do -as when she could fit sheliked to sleep under there to feel safe I think.

I noticed her come out and paw at her nose a bit but never thought much of it . 1/2 hour or so she was at my feet in lving room and I noticed her nose looked puffy. Checked her out and watched her then notice more swelling and i happened to b on my ipod checking forum so I posted for help .(meant off tylon since sat-silly ipod)

Same time I called our  vet office and told them what was going on - by then her eyes were swelling shut and she was breathing really hard and looked in pain. Her whole nose and jaw were puffed up so vet thought spider bite or maybe even swallow one. I agreeed as I had been bitten by something day before that left nasty mark on my hip.  Vet recommended benadryl ASAP if I had any (lucky I did) - to give her 2-4 mg per Kg - they were 25 mg pills so she said give her 1 and watch as i bring her in as its an hour trip to vet--she said I should hopefully see improvement shortly if its gonna work OMG

SHe had started trembling and she was laying on floor drooling alot by now and was very reluctant to get up to go to car.  OMG  THe benadry brought the sweeling down within about 20 minutes and her breathing improved. She had bit of fever but was ok to get up out of car and rub her nose in the snow

We are at home now sitting on floor as she lays beside me - she has a lump on lower lip where she was bitten size of grape OMG have to monitor it as it could be come inflammed/infected.

We have to continue the benadryl every 4-6 hours and monitor her overnight and watch her closely for any signs of -  tremors  -  seizures - breathing difficulty  - swelling/hives  -  vomit/diahrea or if she seems reluctant to get up or walk.OMG

We are to give her lots of fresh water and not worry too much about eating - rest - no walks or rough play etc.-- only go out to go potty (not to worry OMG as an EPI mom I not very good at that yet)  We are to re-evaluate her in morning and consider bringing her in for re-check as she may need antis or steroids if she is worse OMG

Concerned about re-bitten as her reaction could be more harmful second time - anaphylactic shock and need epinephrine shot possibly OMG

poor girl - hope she gets good night rest as I know I wont OMG she scares me so !

Oh Wanda...... we are just gonna have to call ya the OMG Mom!!!  Glad that the Benedryl helped.... but it can take a while to get completely out of her system (the spider-bite toxin) ......(as i mentioned earlier, my neighbor's dog struggled for about 5 days with this!  But at least you know what it is and know what to be on the look out for.... hopefully Maezi will continue to improve and this will never happen again!

omg olesia u made me laugh / thanx - I am usually pretty easy going calm - laugh at life person normally. But it's been hard not to worry so much about maezi. We have been very fortunate that our other pets have been very healthy. With exception of baloo last spring - he started stumbling one day and by end of day he couldn't walk ( paralyzed back legs omg) - we took him to vet right away thinking he had stroke & we were going to have to make ' the big decision' of letting hi go ( was so sad omg) but vet found tic e bedded behind ear in his long hair - once removed he recovered & was able to walk after 3 days :). Now he going strong at 13&1/2.... -----weird - first part of my post disapeared so I repost - this is first half of story

Yup the weather in the Scotland sucks but the spiders are thankfully harmless!

Glad your girl is doing well and Baloo too!

Golly, have just popped back to the forum to find all manner of drama, thank goodness Maezi is on the up! Benedryl eh? I'll have to remember that, we have lots of toxic crawlers here, most of them pretty lethal as the stellar Stella almost found out recently when a snake bit her. These pups are resiliant though. Sounds like a spider but reactions to bee stings can sometimes have similar effects. Anyway, keep up posted, we need to see Maezi out climbing mountains (safely) in the wilderness again soon

I am so glad to hear that Maezi is recovering.   That was scary ...... in real time.

We had a similar experience with our Bridge GSD, Kip.   We never knew what bit him, but within minutes he went from looking like a German Shepherd to looking like a kaola bear.  It was very scary. (OMG)

So glad Maezi is on the mend ....Good for you for catching it in time.     I love how you describe where Maezi sleeps.  Kolby's favorite place is under the bed and he can only get his head under now too.
