Has anyone had their dog diagnosed with Hypothyroidism?  Ryker's blood work indicated Hypothyroidism.  Just as we have his EPI controlled for the most part and his skin allergies keeping at a minimum, the vet discovered a possible thyroid issue.  We are going to have the blood work redone and more detailed to discover if in fact he has hypothyroidism.

I thought he might develop diabetes at some point because of the compromised pancreas issue with EPI, but not thyroid.

Any thoughts or advice?

Hi Deb!   When we first got Dex this past April - his thyroid numbers were a little off (TSH high/Free T4 normal).   They did say once he was stable to retest (felt the numbers would stabilize once EPI stable) and honestly, I haven't gotten him back in for retesting (bad mama).   I wish I had more to share.   Hope all works out ok.   What did the vet find to diagnose this?

Hi Deb.  Yes, this seems to be  becoming another condition that is being dx'd more lately with some of the EPI'ers.  Many of the ones I am aware of have been sending the tests here.

I have heard many good things about her and the way she dx's this.  Good luck.

Maxwell was diagnosed with hypothyroidism before symptoms of EPI started. Dr. Dodds from hemopet believed that he isn't truly hypothyroid and that once he is stable with EPI treatments, his numbers will return to normal. We tried a month of Soloxine and yes his t4 came back within the normal range ( it was low before) but all of his other numbers were messed up. I truly believe that EPI can cause bad numbers but doesn't necessarily mean there's a thyroid problem. I really, really recommend you test with Dr. Dodds at hemopet. She is simply wonderful and her results are more personal, based on breed, age, sex of dog and whether the dog is intact or not. (basically she doesn't think it's natural for a GSD and a chihuahua to be tested on the same scale)
