Do you guys pretty much stop bringing your EPI dog(s) to pet stores like petsmart, petco, petexpo etc because the employees are so quick to shove treats in your dog's face without asking you?.  Well this has happen to me numerous times and i hate having to quit bringing Josie in with me because it's part of her socialization training but at the same time it really gets rather tiresome having to watch the employees around the store to make sure they do not just walk up grab a treat and give it to your dog without asking you.

Poor Josie i guess she'll have to stay home :(

HI Angela..... what you might want to do is make a little cardboard sign-

" NO Treats Please! "  punch two hole on either upper side, run some yarn/twine and have Josie wear it when you go to the store.

I did something like this with my Izzy when i needed to raise money for one of our EPI fundraisers a long time ago.... (our sign said "Beggin for Bucks")... Izzy did not even notice it cuz it was so lightweight, but boy oh boy... everyone else noticed, read and contributed!!!.... this might be a fun and affective way to be able to continue bringing her and not worry)

Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

what a good idea

we have the same in the uk only with perfume in large department stores when they insist on trying to spray you

its really dangerous

we take kara with us to pets at home which  we call the dog shop she loves it and we dont have that problem

We always go to Pets at Home too... they know us well after all the dogs we have taken in there. I have to say they were really good with Razzy and often walked round with us looking at ingredients in kibble because that girl had so many allergies.

I like a place that is animal friendly and listens to you when you say... no treats...!

I absolutely do not avoid taking Kain to Petsmart, we go every other week, faithfully.  Although some employess know us, by name in fact others who do not still offer treats.  In typical Nicole fashion, I look at the upside of this, I look at this as an opportunity to take the chance to inform the un-informed.  I will then proceed to explain why Kain comes here to be weighed and why he cannot have treats.  As long as I am on point, I will usually remember to tell the cashier prior to checking out, but sometimes if the girls are acting out and Kain sees another dog and is excited, then i am rumbling in the purse to get the discount card, coupons, money, well, you know.  Then I usually say that I will take a treat home for Angel, who is not able to be here.  The time before last that I was there, after explaining about kain's EPI, the young lady yelled to her co-worker, that is what the lady thought her dog had that was here last week. She told me she had a brochure, I pulled out my EPI card and asked her if thatwas the same logo that was on the brochure?  She replied yes.  I am assuming that it was the brochure that I hung on the community board at pet Supplies Plus. Yes, some hang out in bars, while I hang out in pet stores, basically costs the same, but usually I feel better when I leave the pet store!

I have been checking into vests for our dogs, similiar to the ones that working dogs wear. My thoughts would be that on one side it could say please do not feed me, while the other side would have the EPI4Dogs logo on it. Would really help raise awareness for EPI & protect our dogs from getting treats from well-intentioned strangers.

I already use a bright orange hunting vest on Addie when our family comes in for the holidays. The house is full of 20+ people & of course Addie is begging from everyone who has a handful of Chex-mix! It really works to remind family NOT to feed her.

Thoughts? Is this idea worth pursuing?

Before maezi wAs dx with EPI the staff at petland & petcetera always gave her treats - now the staff knows us when we go in and don't offer any treats but show us any new 'indestructible' toys they have in =} .., also they have helped go thru all the foods and even brought in some grainfree liver treats. But the vest idea sounds good !

I called Patriot Paws folks yesterday & got the name of their harness source. There dog's harnesses are awesome. They have their own embroidery done locally. I also have a local source for embroidery so I will begin to investigate this idea further.

What about a smaller local store. We have a little mom and pop type place that we love. They only have 3 employees. The know us, know our dogs, know who can have what treats. They know which dogs have behavior/fear issues and how to help make the most out of a social outing.

Foster -

That's us also... small local mom & pop type place that we love!  Along with no problems with unauthorized treats, they have been soooooooo wonderful at helping us special order in the food that we need for our pup, Boss.

That is a great idea, but do you guys run into the products being more expensive there?  There is one specialty shoppe near us, but the price is so much higher.  I really love to support local businesses, but it is so hard with one income, 2 3 year olds, 2 cats, 2 dogs... every dollar counts.  What are your experiences with the cost?

Hello Nicole - Savings?  Unfortunately that word and the food/medicine for Boss cannot be used in the same sentance   I am happy with the prices at the place where I shop... but then maybe I am used to the sticker shock of so many things up here in Alaska being higher priced than the Lower 48 states and just thankful to even have the availability locally nowadays as that has not always been the case.  Here is a link to the place we shop showing their current sales pricing...

We have only one local pet store for now. It's a mom and pop.  The big stores are 30 miles away. The Dog House (as it's named) sometimes overcharges, if so I buy online. Also like supporting the local guy. Unfortunately(?), PetSmart is coming to town in a few months. I figure the Dog House is going to shut down. Too bad, I'd rather support small business.

Paula and Maya (bday 12/21/06) (diagnosed 10/26/10 TLi 1.5, B12 659 (ref:249-733), weight 52 lbs. After 30 days, retested B12/folate - B12 plummeted to 200, which greatly affected her personality. After following B12 protocol, currently giving weekly B12 shots at home. Weight on 4/24/12: 72 lbs - the picture of health.

Love the idea of the small mom and pop also!    We go to Petsmart but because I am the chatter I am - they all got to know Jackie and about her EPI.   If someone new stopped to ask about her the first thing I did was say she has EPI and is on a special diet.    Sounds like the people down south are quicker on the trigger finger than us up north!    You might want to speak with the mgmt and tell them to inform their employees not to give pets treats without asking the guardians first because of conditions like EPI - it's a small thing, but it may help.
