HI, Not sure if this is already common knowledge, but I just found out so wanted to pass it on. Novartis company has suspended production of its heartworm and flea meds (and also some human meds). Looks like Interceptor, Sentinel, Program, Capstar, Dermaxx are some of the meds affected. Went to order Star's heartworm meds online and that is how I found out. I was able to get hers, but supplies are limited so if you use these products you may want to order soon or check with your vet/pharmacy. Lisa | |

I knew Novartis shut down their Nebraska manufacturing plant December of 2011. My guess is they "officially" closed it in December but stopped production before then. Novartis says it’s closed due to maintenance work and to strengthen standards. The FDA inspected their facility in July 2011 and found a host of problems such as quality issues, none of the complaints against Novartis products in 2011 was properly reviewed by Novartis, not enough personnel and their personnel are poorly trained, etc. Sounds as if QC was non existent...tablets mixed in with gel caps, unknown tablets mixed in with antacids....just a mess.

I read that too.....makes me wonder about the QC of their pet meds too. Star has always used Sentinel....being a collie mix and not knowing about her MDR1 gene status (the gene that causes ivermectin/drug problems in collies).....I always shied away from Heartgard/Ivermectin with her. I liked the flea med component in it as well, as Star had a bad reaction to Frontline and I didn't want to chance another topical with her. Poses a dilemma for us. Bummer.

-- Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.
