HI Patti. By any chance, could there be a food intolerance going on? Sometimes these things happen and we need to ride them out. I would try to find out what caused this, parasites, food, etc. Did they do a fecal? Have you tried a different antibiotic if the tylan doesn't seem to be working? Sometimes we have to go on a different one now and then. Hang in there and sending you hugs.

Hello Patti - I am so sorry to hear you and Reignya are struggling. Yes, EPI dogs can have ups and downs... but blood in the poop is not an ordinary EPI occurrence. Has your vet discussed colitis, inflammatory bowel disease or food intolerances? Is it possible for you to get another opinion from a different vet on how to best help Reignya?

Patti Becky is right blood in the poop is not a usual EPI problem. What colour is the blood? If fresh and red it would probably be from colitis... I had a problem with that once and it wasn't caused by the EPI. If the blood is darker it could be intestinal problem again not from the EPI but from infection of some sort. I would go to another vet and get another opinion because your vet doesn't seem very clued up if he/she thinks blood is normal for an EPIer. Val

Hi Patti, I agree with the others. Kolby has had a lot of sensitivity and symptoms with the EPI, but blood in his stools was never one of them. I hope you can find the cause so that you and Reignya can rest easily. Let us know what you find out. Barb

Patti - Just seconding everyone's opinion here, the bloody stool is probably not EPI-related.
However, I think the most important question here is what color is the blood? Different colors tell us where the blood is coming from. Bright red could mean Reigyna could have parvo (has she been vaccinated?), may have eaten something that tore/scratched something on the way in or out, or like Val or Becky said, it could be colitis.
Dark, black-ish blood means that it's been digested (or at least gone through the stomach) and could indicate bleeding ulcers.
The blood could also be from parasites like Karen said or an issue with the food she's on. Did your vet do a fecal test? That will tell you if it's a parasite or some kind of bacteria causing the blood and vomiting.
Anyhow, thinking of you and hoping things are getting better. Also sending lots of hugs and strong thoughts to you and Reignya. Keep us updated!

Oops sorry, just re-read your post and saw that you did have a fecal test done last week and bacteria was present.
Seems like maybe switching up the antibiotic might be the best course? Even in humans it's possible to take one antibiotic for so long that it looses its effectiveness...

Hello Patti - I have been thinking of you and Reignya all day.... wanted to bump this thread back up to the top in the hopes of maybe getting a status update from you on how things are going today. I found your last post from January when the bloody poop started... here is a link to it... http://www.epi4dogs.com/apps/forums/topics/show/7135936-alot-of-blood-in-poop It sounds like she was put on Metronidazole at the time and it helped? Is it still bright red blood your seeing? Has your vet prescribed anything else besides the Metronidazole or Tylan to try?

Hello Patti Sorry to hear the problems going on and to me this don't sound so EPI related. I would get a second vets ideas. Just my thoughts... good luck and I pray everything comes out ok.

HI Patti~ SO sorry you and Reignya are going thru this...... but everyone is spot on.... this is not an EPI related thing.....and the improtant question is.... the color of the blood.... Is it bright red blood ??? This could indicate colitis from the bacteria found in the stool.. If so, to watch colitis in action IS scary.... my eldest dog had a bout of it and was literally shooting bright red blood from the rectum... even though i knew it was colitis, if it didn't stop by evening, i was taking him to the vets. BUt the anti's thankfully started to kick in by then. If it is colitis, depending on the type of bacteria (positive or negative gram) will determine what type of anti's are needed.... so that might be why the Tylan is not working. If you have any SLippery ELm (herbal powder) you can give him that just too soothe the insides until the anti's have time to work. Just don't give too much (maybe only 1/2 teaspoon) cause although SLiperry elm is safe, while it places a mucosa covering that soothes the intestines... that same mucosa covering also inhibits (just a little) the anti's effectiveness ... If it is dark red blood... he needs to be seen by a vet ASAP.... dark red blood can be many different things, some of them serious..... Please keep us posted.

Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils. In Feb 2013, Izzy developed a very serious condition called IMHA which she (thankfully) beat and is now in remission. We also discovered that now, at 8 years old, she not only has EPI, but also Diabetes and Low Thyroid. Izzy was able to receive excellent care because of the kindness of so many here on epi4dogs and is currently doing extra-ordinarily well. If anyone could spend a day with Izzy, they would never guess that she has any health problems!
