Just a gentle reminder folks .....Please do not mention specific breeder names on the FORUM. Although i realize everyone's intentions are good ...this could turn into a liability for epi4dogs. You are more than welcome to discuss privately to see who's dog is related to who. The best we can all do is contact our breeder immediately (if there is one) when our dogs are diagnosed to let them know that one of their mating's produced an EPI dog and inform them to the best of our ability about this horrible EPI condition . Other than this, assuming that this or that dog is a carrier is simply an assumption. The genetics are NOT that simple. Often times, a breeding is already done long before the breeder has any indication that there is a possibility of EPI. Until the specific genetics are confirmed (and they are still working on this) .... the researchers are recommending to not breed the same parents to each other (who produced an EPI pup) ... but they can be used for breeding with other mates until further indication. PLEASE read the most recent research study of two confirmed EPI parents and the results of their puppies: http://www.epi4dogs.com/research.htm Brief Communication - J Vet Intern Med 2010;24:450–452 Heritability of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency in German Shepherd Dogs E. Westermarck, S.A.M. Saari, and M.E. Wiberg "Background: Several studies have revealed that exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) is an inherited disease in German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs). Pedigree analyses have suggested an autosomal recessive inheritance model. Objective: Test mating of 2 dogs with EPI. Animals: A sire and dam purebred GSD both with EPI and a litter of 6 puppies. Methods: Test mating and long-term follow-up of offspring. The pancreas was biopsied via laparotomy on 26 occasions. Serum trypsin-like immunoreactivity was measured. Study was approved by Animal Ethics Committee. Results: During the 12-year study period only 2 of the 6 offsprings developed pancreatic acinar atrophy (PAA). In 1 puppy, end-stage PAA and in the other puppy partial PAA was diagnosed."

Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

No problem Ann.... connections are welcomed to be discussed here... such as who's dog may be a cousin, aunt, brother, etc to someone else's dog... just don't mention the actual breeder's name, because if it get's ugly, i can be liable.....and that would be the end of epi4dogs :(. I don't want to make anyone feel bad, afterall....not everyone realizes that this could be an issue.... but since it bubbled up in a topic, i decided now would be a good time to mention not to mention breeder names

Thanks for pointing this out Olesia. Perhaps it should be added to the Forum "rules" so it's right there for everyone to be acquainted with?

I agree with Barb we need to have it in the rules. Also we need to make it clear that we cant use there KC name here. However i think that it would be useful if off forum we could have the dogs progency so we might be able to collate any links and then put a good case to the relevant breeders i would be quite happy to do this for the UK . I know they do have this "rule" on the "other" site - they also don't allow you to talk about suppliers of enzymes and other medicines, etc. that EPI dogs might need. That part I don't like because I don't know if I would have found an economical way to manage Sofie's EPI without the advice from this forum. I have taken the subject offline with my breeder and others. Tracey

Great idea.... i will place it in the rules to specifically not to mention breeders by name. However, everyone is still welcome to mention enzymes, food, meds, and if so and so's dog is related to someone else's dog (brother, sister, cousin, aunt etc.) this will not cause any problems.

Don't know if you have a legal beagle in the drawer that you could check in with Olesia, but since you're going to amend the Rules to address this, I wonder about also including a statement about not naming vets, rescues, other persons or entities etc in a negative ie potentially libelous context. The risk would be the same as naming a breeder in that context and the rule is intended to mitigate the risk.
