Hi Everyone

Some more news... Frodo is now down to only 1 poop a day :), though tge quality of the poop has a lot to be desired.

The enzyme we are using is somethign called Al5Zyme by co. called Alembic. Not very popular but it seems to do the job. The potency is not mentioned in USP but in mg.

Some next steps :

1. Next saturday , it will be 4 weeks since he is getting bi weekly B12 shots, so we will get a B12 serum level done again.

2.We are still waiting on the Tylan which will arrive before the 26th, so we are hoping that would improve the poop quality.

3. We are still feeding him the same quantity of food 3x a day. Planning to increase that to 4. Thoughts?

Thanks,

Kabir

Hi Kabir...

1 poop a day is very good news.... and i suspect that as soon as you receive the Tylan that will produce better poo- since i also suspect that Frodo is still dealing with SIBO....that is frustrating that it is taking so long to get the Tylan.

Regarding the B12.... i personal would not re-test the B12 until after you receive the Tylan and Frodo is able to take the Tylan for at least 2-3 weeks.... the reason why i am saying this is because "any imbalance  (SIBO) in the intestinal bacterial flora is also likely to reduce the absorption of cobalamin (B12)" ....so you may not get a good results reading from the B12 you ahve been giving him.... can you talk to your vet about continuing the B12 as you have been doing (extra B12 will not hurt) and wait to test until later?

Ahhh... finding enzymes in India... i tried to look into what you are using and did not have good luck.... BUT... earlier this week i was helping another EPI member in Indonesia and i found this enzyme company in India.... i know they produce beef enzymes that may be used for cystic fibrosis patients who cannot tolerate pork....but i was not sure if they only sold to businesses or if the general public can purchase from them.... you might want to look into this company:

http://www.stylesolutions.co.in/Crude_Pharmaceuticals.htm

they list it as pancreatin made from bovine pancreas... which will work.

Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

Hey everyone

I am at my wits end here. The Creon is going well at all. Frods poop used to be semiformed at least before, but with the creon its always watery.

I am going to try and get fresh pancreas tomorrow. Being in India, it would most probably be Lamb Pancreas. Do you think that would be a good idea?

Regards,

Kabir

Hi Kabir

How is the Lamb Pancreas going?? I have been wondering and in the mean time some one else came up with allergie issues and is also looking at Lamb Pancreas. I thought maybe you could help.

Kabir.... YES!!!! Lamb pancreas is also an acceptable pancreatic replacement enzymes to give an EPI patient.

(from: http://www.epi4dogs.com/enzyme.htm )FEEDING RAW PANCREAS:  If you would like to try using raw pancreas;  fresh beef, pork or lamb pancreas are recommended.

One to three or four ounces of raw pancreas can replace one teaspoon of pancreatic extract. Raw pancreas may be frozen in cubes for future use and thawed naturally, but never heat on the stove or in the microwave.

If possible beef or lamb raw pancreas is recommended over pork pancreas because of the "possibility" of the transmission of pseudorabies, although rare.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudorabie Also... raw pancreas is not all the same.  Each and every gland has a different potency of enzymes.  This is not just species to species.  The potency can vary from one farm animal to another farm animal as well. If you use 1 ounce of raw pancreas with the batch you are currently using the next batch may need to be tweaked. Fresh pancreas has a shelf life (in the freezer) of up to 3 months.

Kabir, please keep us posted and let us know how things progress!

One poop a day is excellent progress!   I remember thinking that 3 a day was a huge improvement with Kolby.

The tylan should improve things a lot too, so let us know.
