Hello everyone

we have had a major blip over the last few days

kara went off her food a few weeks ago so you do what you can you encourage them to eat in our case its the tripe mix,

 no good...................................

so I try other enticers such as chicken a small amount of cat food pieces of ham whatever and she eats bits

b12 is bang up to date, she has one every other week

anyway we get to maybe Saturday and she develops diiareah which I cannot control I have tried every antibiotic which usually works, no good

And she stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

we have changed nothing.....................

So back to Uncle Ian the vet

She has a temperature which isnt high but its there and her tummy is tender to palpation so more tablets to try to alleviate that problem I have to call him with thoughts on Thursday

He has suggested that maybe she has become resistant to the regime we have and is going to do a full blood count which he tells me will show whether she is intollerant to any proteins

she has to fast for 24 hours geeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Poor baby, the test is set for Teesday as there isnt time to do it before as we have a bank holiday here on next Monday

any thoughts would be well apreciated

have to admit I am concerned here as you can imagine

the one good thing is she is eating her kibble and a bit of chicken so I will keep an eye on her at the moment she is going every couple of hours!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! one more night of no sleep so out comes the Kindle which has been a Godsend

it sure looks like we were meant to retire what with Derek with shingles and Kara not good it sucks right now

Oh, Jean, I am really sorry to hear that you and Derek and Kara are going through all this.  Setbacks are so hard.   And a 24 hour fast??  Yikes.  Not to mention all the sleep you are not getting.

I am thinking of you.  I know how worried you must be about Kara.   And I know the shingles are really rough for Derek too.  My dad and my sister had some terrible bouts with them.

Kolby went off his food last summer and it was really tough.   I still have quite a few cans of tripe left over from the ordeal  ...it didn't work.  But he eventually came out of it and got back on track.  But it wasn't fun.   You have got even more on your plate.

Sending healing energy your way.

And sending big HUGS across the pond.

Jean,  I wish I had some words of wisdom for you, but I think this is definitely one for Uncle Ian the vet, especially with the fever.  It's so hard when any pet is ill, and when it's a dog with health issues, it's even harder.

I had shingles in the mid-90's, and they were beyond awful.  The doctor gave me 2 drugs, Zovirax and prednisone, and they really helped me tremendously.  I hope Derek's got something to help him recover more quickly.  I remember thinking at the time that I would not wish shingles on my worst enemy.  I hope he's on the road to recovery soon.

Hang in there.  I'll be sending my positive thoughts and energy to you.

Sasha was diagnosed with EPI, SIBO and B12 in May 2011 weighing 25kg
Did well on Nutrix duck and potato,
with pancreatic enzyme for cats and dogs,
3meals x 200grams per meal, got to 32kg :)
But then things suddenly went down hill,
as she was diagnosed with cancer of the brain.
So after a struggle, she was put to sleep on 20th March 2012
Much missed but still in our hearts x

Mom of two EPI Shiloh Shepherds:

Pharaoh born Nov. 2007 and dx with epi December 2009.   Pharaoh weighed 62.4 lbs. (15 lb. weight loss) when diagnosed in 12/2009.

Weight 10/31/11 his weight was 76.6.

85lbs on 9/22/12.

Received six weeks of B12 shots Jan-Feb 2010 but his B12 on 8/10/2010 was only 232. So started weekly shots at home, which we continue to give.

His older half sister is  Taiko born Sept. 2006  and was dx with epi June 2010.  Since she has severe bilateral hip dysplasia she had always been on the thin side.  Taiko's weight was 70.7 lbs. in June 2010 (time of diagnosis; about a 10 lb. weight loss.

Weight on 10/31/11 was 80.4 and on 9/22/12 was 82.4 lbs.  B12 was 211 in June 2010 so started six weeks of shots and was only 293 on 8/10/10.  She receive B12 shots weekly at home.

Both are fed twice a day and we use either Costco grain free brand or Merrick BG brand:2 1/2 cups kibble in the morning and 4 oz cooked meat (usually steak) with 4 crushed tablets and in the evening 2 cups kibble with 4 oz cooked meat with 4 crushed tablets.

Hi Jean

Sorry to hear that Kara is having issues - hoping that it's nothing more than a temporary foray into something her nose shouldn't have been in and that the tummy will settle down again. Uncle Ian sounds like such a gem - I'm sure he will figure it out.

Hope it works out quickly and that Derek feels better too - there is much on that plate of yours - here's to everything clearing up soon!

Hi Jean

Sorry ole love, you seem to be going through the mill lets hope uncle Ian can sort things out. Poor Derek. shingles are terrible things... give him a hug from me.

But joing the club.

We are having a bad time with Cassie too.

For more than 2 months she has been refusing meals and it was hard to get her to eat. Last Sunday she only had a few bites in the evening and nothing then for 2 days.... took her to the vets yesterday and they are doing complete load of tests inc TLI.

She ate a small raw meal yesterday evening and a tiny supper so when we went for a check up this morning she seemed to be getting better... no chance.

We came back, gave her a rest and put raw breakfast down.... not a chance she will eat it.

She will eat Bonios and hard biscuits but not food.

Seems like she has a blockage somewhere and can't swallow soft stuff.

Dunno... going back tomorrow and will request a complete xray of throat and gut.

Intersting life, innit?

Oh Jean and Val, I am so sorry to hear about both of you going through this rough patch. I hope that you both figure out what's going on with your girls soon! The fur kids never let us off easy, do they....always something to fret over. Sometimes I think that is why the more challenging dogs find their way to great people like you....the man upstairs knows who is going to take care of the fur babies and give them the love and help they need.

Jean, I hope your hubby is feeling better and recovering himself.

Val, I know you told me that Cassie loves to eat things like my Maya. Do you think she could have a blockage from eating something she shouldn't have? We had a neighbor that had a setter that would not eat and was vomiting and lost lots of weight. Turned out she had swallowed a block of wood and it wouldn't pass through. Anyhow, the x-ray tomorrow should give you more information if something like that is the case.

You ladies keep us all posted on your pups. I know I will be anxiously waiting for (good) news.

I wouldn't be surprized if she had swallowed half a house brick, she is the worst I've had for eating things.

A couple of weeks ago I found her trying to chew a brick out of the house wall... the cottage has stood here for 200 years and the way its going it won't be here much longer.

It is likely she swallowed a sliver of wood, she is always stealing logs we put by for the stove and shedding them.... or even chewing a bumble bee if she catches it... she is an accident on legs that girl.
