Hi Jean,

So glad to hear things are turning around......in many good ways.  So interesting to read about the protein.  It sounds like this new food agrees with her.

I know how upset you must have been.   These sheps have such sensitive systems and can be so reactive.  I have fingers, toes, and paws crossed that everything keeps going in a positive direction.

Hugs to you.

hello everyone

just an update

so far so good on the new food

http://burnspet.co.uk/products/burns-for-dogs/alert-lamb-brown-rice-dog-food-for-assistance-dogs.html

i was very nervous about the rice but the brown variety is better than white I hear

http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=128

her poops are amazing, small in quantity and proper colour

all very odd however she is back on the oxytet two three times a day and b12 every other week so that we can evaluate her progress with the vet who is pleased with the protein reduction

the only thing that bothers me is the amount you feed which seems very little but we will see

what makes me laugh is years ago my mom used to make our dogs food from offal and whatever and used to say "dont give a dog too much meat it makes them crazy"

anyway guys back to the Queens Jubilee celebrations for me love all that rubbish

jxxxx

Jean ..I'm glad Kara  is doing better. Our first GSD girl Sadie did fine on food with rice in it. And your saying  "dont give a dog too much meat it makes them crazy" ; My grandfather said the same thing !!   I had forgotten about that!!

Enjoy the Queens Jubilee !!!

If one updtated ones signature one would know what one was feeding Miss kara.

When one feeds Miss MAddie  Moo Burns see signature one feeds 400 grams .

One also know other EPI  owner that does this as well.

One has found that most of the foods with less fibre seem to need to feed less !!!!

Otto is a throughbreed Burns dog he stays around 40-41 kg which is were he needs to be he is to long to support alot of weight and Maddie is doing well on it.

Great news on the food and no shame in what happened with her and the incident with the guy.  The Selgian, I don't believe it is sold in the U.S., our comp would be Xanex or Valium.  Different from the Prozac that I gave Angel, in that the drug type is different, Prozac can sometimes take some time to get into the dog's system, I am pretty sure that Selgian, like the Valium I have for Angel will work right away.  Let us know she she does on the meds as well.

Um i will have a think and come back to you about this is she doing formal training i was wondering if somehow you could make someting with her kibble as we are doing a doggy detox.

Are you referring to the fibre etc yes i think we may have to re-think the Uk recommended foods.............look at the difference yiu have seen by reducing the fibre content!!! And  i dont use anything above 3%..

Anyway needs some thought i will give you a bell .

hello again

i have now updated Karas profile as I am thinking we will be staying with the Burns lamb and brown rice

http://burnspet.co.uk/products/burns-for-dogs/alert-lamb-brown-rice-dog-food-for-assistance-dogs.html

my vet wanted a much lower protein and fibre level which  coincidentally is what Olesia was advocating following the convention however this was partly to reduce her reactive behaviour and help her imune system

but I wasnt sure about the brown rice, howewer she is coping well and again it coincides with what O said about grain free, we will have to rethink our thoughts maybe when I return from Bonnie Scotland I will have a good think and maybe chew it over with Gillian whilst I am there

Uncle Ian was convinced she would tolerate the brown rice as it has a different range and he seems to be right but as I have said he has been treating EPI for about 25 years, but we have to accept that every dog is different and will tolerate different methods

Ann

I loved the 'one' post it tickled me no end.

Jean

Its great you have found some food that is agreeing with Kara. Razzy never could have 'grain free' or I never found one she tolerated, not that there were any at the start that I knew of., but she managed with the Bakers which I NEVER wanted to feed. Cassie is having James Wellbeloved Duck and Rice and she is going on OK with it. (Provivded I cook chicken in water to make a broth and put a ladle full over the kibble.)

Ha....one has to tempt these finicky ladies, does one not?

Great to read of Kara's improvement Jean. Re the food we were also giving Lulu what seemed an abnormally large amount even allowing for EPI until we started fiddling with her B12 more and more and have now gone from 3.5 cups per day to 2.5 which is a reduction of around 28%. Amazing and I think she may have a little way to go yet.

And I hope Kara's been enjoying the jubilee celebrations too - they're both from good German stock after all! ;)

Lulu (aka Miss Lulupants) is a 5 year old 'Red Shepherd' (Australian Red Heeler x Long-hair GSD) who lives in Adelaide, South Australia. Diagnosed with EPI in April 2010. Currently on one Creon 25k per meal; 3.5  3  2.5 cups Canidae Pure Elements grain free kibble per day + one Wonderlabs Trinfac every 2nd day. Click here for diet/med details. Miss Lulupants' story has been archived but it starts here. Lulu currently weighs: 19.4kg (42.8lbs). Was officially a chunky monkey for a while too :P Lulu is super-smart, a bit plump and very pretty (everybody says so - including her!).

Hi Ann

One tried to feed Cassie raw and did so for a while but the dear child decided it didn't want it anymore. One tried several kibbles before the child accepted the James W from the Royal Canine stable. One cannot argue that the child is an English bred Shepherd, can one?

I didn't get to watch much of the Jubilee because the gardens are in such need of attention but I caught up online with a few pictures..... we do tradition rather well, do we not?

Ha, Cassie lost her very prim reputation yesterday when she dashed up the field and caught a rabbit.... by the time Rob had followed her round the field 5 times and took it off her it was deceased... rather dead.... not very active!

I will skin and cook it to mix with her chicken and broth....do you think she was telling me that she would rather have fresh rabbit than store bought chicken?

If she goes on like this she will be another Countess Razzy.... I do seem to pick rather snobby sheps considering I'd a died-in-wool peasant.

HI Jean.... SO, SO glad to hear the new diet is working.... Yep..... we all know the magic is indeed related to the fiber .... but OMG...try to explain it (without using the simple term "grain-free) ........ i just sat here today staring dumb-founded at the computer trying to put in understandable context soluble vs insoluble fermentable vs poorly fermentable and how it ALL works in the gut.....well... all i can say is no wonder why nobody wanst to explain this.... OMG... it is beyond convoluted!!!!!!!!!!!!

So............ am taking a break from taxing my poor 'ol addled brain and promise to deliver a "fiber" piece... sometime ............................................like the nutritionists recommended.

Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.
