I see a lot of relapses lately... Cally included and started to wonder if when our dogs eat stuff they shouldn't - which normally happens in the spring/summer when there is an abundance of fresh grass, rotted sticks, slugs/dirt, rabbit poop etc.. and if their sensitive tummies can't just poop them out, does that trigger SIBO, which could then lead to the whole downward spiral of frustration we go through? For me, it feels like, so long as Cally isn't eating anything that she can't easily digest, she's a-ok. While on grain free diet, 1/2 tsp of enzymes with every 2 cups of food.. she still eats a few pizza crusts every friday, a bit of left over plan spaghetti here and there, a couple of treats without enzymes a day etc... but if grandpa gives her some other treats that she ends up gobbling in big chucks, or eats the earlier listed crap, she shows her signs of problems a-brewing... sore back, not so normal poops, sometimes with blood. The last few times, I've even given her plain white rice (yes, rice to a non-gain dog), in place of her food for a couple of days, then mixed some food in gradually, upped the enzymes a bit and no treats, she seems to get back on track... after a fully packed poop of sticks or grass comes out. So I wonder if the blockage passages, the appetite comes back, poops go back to normal and all returns to the usual.... but if it doesn't, or lingers too long, the SIBO kicks in and we have a full blown episode? I still chuckle to myself everytime I think about just how much "we" look at poop, poke at poop, worry about poop and say "good girl" when its normal poop!

-- Lisa.. Cally's Mom. Cally is a 6 year old Doodle... Pappa = black poodle, Momma = golden retriever. In April 2011, started to show signs of EPI. Went through all the stress and poop watching in the first few months, after meds, b12 shots, not grain diet and Diane's Enzymes, Cally's been A-OK since Aug 2011. Here she is.. www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150629415150647.692272.878075646&l=85942f60a0

HI Lisa..... i just can't resist.... posting her swimming pic... she is like the all time water bug, eh?! Anyway... i think you might be on to something.... cuz in the spring time.... all my dogs start chomping on the fresh green young tender grass.... and sure enough, Izzy's poo goes a wee bit south for a few days and there may be a stinky aroma floating around too....so i usually wait a couple of days to see if it is just a small blip or if it continues to decline and i need to administer Tylan for SIBO... before it gets really bad. Cally sounds like Izzy.... we cheat .....and we cheat on Fridays too with ... yep..... same thing | |

-- Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils. In Feb 2013, Izzy developed a very serious condition called IMHA which she (thankfully) beat and is now in remission. We also discovered that now, at 8 years old, she not only has EPI, but also Diabetes and Low Thyroid. Izzy was able to receive excellent care because of the kindness of so many here on epi4dogs and is currently doing extra-ordinarily well. If anyone could spend a day with Izzy, they would never guess that she has any health problems!
