Kali is my best little friend and I want to do what ever i can to save her and help her not be in pain.  She is non-responcive to any foods I have been force feeding  her baby food with a syringe. she is getting weaker and sleeps most of the time not wanting to go on her walks. her stools are still good but down to once a day. she drink as much water as you give her so I have to be careful with that because it does cause her to vomit when she drinks too much. any help would be greatly appreciated.

HI Mary..... i am so sorry you are going thru this with Kali, your heart must be breaking!

My apologies for folks not readily responding to you- -this website has been having issues since Sunday.... down more than it has been working, so i am sure people are getting frustrated after 4 days of this....and not on as much.

I honestly do not know what to suggest to you since i do not have any personal experience with kidney issues.... hopefully someone who does will chime in.... i will try to do some research and see what i find out if anything that mayb be useful for you.

Olesia, owned by Izzy-45lb SWD, Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.3, Stable almost 7 yrs! Once stable, was able to reduce enzymes to only 1/2 tsp of Enzymes with each meal, but after almost 4 years of stabilization... had to increase the amount of enzymes to 3/4 teaspoon with each meal. Feed various grain-free kibble+real meat, 6x pancreatin enzymes from EnzymeDiane. I give 1 tsp of coconut oil one day and 1 tsp salmon oil next day, and also give canned sardines packed without salt or canned herring for extra omega oils.

In Feb 2013, Izzy developed a very serious condition called IMHA which she (thankfully) beat and is now in remission. We also discovered that now, at 8 years old, she not only has EPI, but also Diabetes and Low Thyroid.  Izzy was able to receive excellent care because of the kindness of so many here on epi4dogs and  is currently  doing extra-ordinarily well. If anyone could spend a day with Izzy, they would never guess that she has any health problems!

Hi Mary.  There are some kidney support groups available.  http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/K9KIDNEYS/

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/K9Kitchen/

http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/K9KidneyDiet/

Here is a link, these were on the first page, there may be more. http://groups.yahoo.com/search?query=kidney+for+dogs&sort=relevance

I hope you find something that works and that will help her.  It's so hard when they don't feel good.

Mary~

Since dealing with Kidney issues are way out of my realm.... i checked to see who in the vet community is well known for managing kidney diseases..... the is a vet by the name of Francis Kallfelz who is at Cornell Univ and works with kidney cases at the Amercian College of Veterinarian Nutrition.....

ww.vet.cornell.edu/faculty/kallfelz/

his email address is:  fak1@cornell.edu

you might want to contact him.

Hope this is of some help for you..... and i think the support groups that Karen suggested are also something that you might want to look into.... they can give you their day-to-day expereinces like we do here for EPI... so that might be of some help also.

Mary:

Olesia has given you a wonderful resource to use, and I would at least see what he may suggest.  The things that I can think of off the top of my head are all natural, and it appears that you have a great deal covered unless Dr. Kalfelz can think of something to add or change in what you are now doing.  One thing I would add right away is milk thistle.  If she has kidney failure, make sure her diet is low in phosphorus and low in acids...those that are high is phosphorus are the high protein foods such as meat, poultry, fish, dairy products, peas and beans.  Have they determined why this is happening?

I'm sorry that I'm not offering much information at the moment...please know that we all care and I need to check out a couple of other things to see if they may help.  Please keep us posted.

Mary,

I am so sorry to hear what Kali is going through. It sounds as if Kali is in rough shape and none of us are vets and I don’t think you should try anything without a vet’s approval. If you are not comfortable with what your vet is doing than call Cornell per Olesia’s post, see a specialist or go to the links Karen gave you and they might be able to direct you to a local vet well versed in kidney disease. As much as everyone wants to help you, Kali needs skilled care and we can’t provide that, we do not have the expertise. I hope you find the help you need and wishing Kali a speedy recovery.

Yes, Kathy is right in that none of us are professionals which is why I suggested that you contact Dr. Kalfelz.  However, what I did suggest is safe, usually added by veterinarians and very often helpful,, otherwise I would have never made the suggestion.  But it's also why I also said that I needed to do a little research on the other things that had come to mind.  The food mentioned is why most vets will put your dog on one of the specialized foods, or there are some great home cooked recipes that address the needs of a dog experiencing kidney failure.

Hi Mary~

Please take whatever information we suggest to you and PLEASE talk to your vet about these suggestions - - Kali has a lot going on... is on a lot of medications and we are not able to share any personal experiences with you dealing specifically with kidney disease...... our hands-on experiences are with EPI...... so PLEASE discuss with your vet, my concern is that we have no idea what if any interaction there may be whether with the kidney diet, herbs or meds in this particular situation.....hopefully you can get some answers via the kidney recommended sites and contacts.
