Very interesting................ UPDATE!

April 15, 2016

We are going to temporarily hold off on the below Mini-SIBO/SID study...... because Dr. Suchodolski of Texas A&M Gastrointestinal Lab (TAMU) has found a very interesting indication regarding EPI dog's microbioita (particular concentrations of bacteria in the gut) .

Because of his findings.....Epi4Dogs and Dr.Suchodolski will be working together to see if there is a possibility of treating and eliminating SIBO/SID without on-going antibiotics.....but first.... we will be doing a mini study-survey of different groups of our EPI dogs to confirm his microbiota findings.  After this microbiota survey-study is  completed, we will then conduct (via "re-announcement" on the forum) the below study with Raw Green Tripe and possibly some additional natural possibilities in an effort to hopefully find a way to effectively treat SIBO/SID without having to depend on antibiotics.

Cure SIBO/SID without antibiotics?????

Wouldn't it be nice if we can effectively get rid of SIBO / SID (small intestinal dysbiosis) without antibiotics??? Because a few owners have attested to the fact that Raw Green Tripe has actually alleviated SIBO /SID we have decided to do a mini-trial, with those who want to try Raw Green Tripe, to see if substantiated record keeping supports this anecdotal result.

Ground Raw Green Tripe can be purchased from (but not limited to):

The trial can be done for either 10 days or 3 weeks... pet owner's choice.... all that is required is that the pet owner keep up with the record-keeping  (see form at the bottom of this page) and not interfere with the trial by give anything else such as snacks, treats or anything other than the suggested food trial for the designated duration. The RGT Study:

The most effective way to treat SID (small intestinal dysbiosis)/SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth) is via diet change. However a diet change is not always a practical way to initially address SID especially when dealing with a sick dog, like an EPI dog. Because time is usually critical at this stage, testing and trialing various foods / food types in an effort to ascertain best food to address that dog's gut flora imbalance/microbiome (SID) is too time-consuming. This is why Tylan (Tylosin Tartrate) antibiotic is the current protocol to treat SID. Tylan does address SID, however, once the Tylan regimen is completed, the loose stools often reappear, hence the premise of this trial.

Can Raw Green Tripe be a viable option in initially treating SID in sick dogs with long term effectiveness.

Raw Green Tripe, the entire unprocessed stomach of a cud-chewing animal such as a cow or deer, has 2,900,000 grams of Lactic Acid Bacteria (Lactobacillus Acidophilus). There are many forms of Lactobacillus but the type of Lactobacillus bacteria species in the Raw Green Tripe is Lactobacillus Acidopholus. This is the beneficial bacteria found in the digestive systems of other animals (hence raw green tripe ). It has the unique benefit of doubling it's population within 2-3 hours (in human studies) and is the only member of its genus to colonize the gut long-term after supplementation, up to a year after ingestion helping regulate digestion. It has even been shown in clinical testing (human studies) to be effective in treating IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

It has a desirable calcium:phosphorus ratio of 1:1. Green tripe’s pH is acidic, and it has the correct proportions of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.  An analysis by Woodson & Tenant Laboratories on www.RawGreenTripe.com yielded the following which is a good overall general analysis, although there will be some variation from one piece of tripe to another:

Raw  Green Tripe

424 Cal/Cup

Protein                                 13.33%

pH                           6.84

Fat                                       12.75%

Ash                          1.25%

Crude Fiber                            2.99%

Iron                      126.4mg/kg

Calcium                                    0.1%

Potassium                  0.14%

Moisture                                 72.24%

Manganese               25.7 mg/kg

Phosphorous                             0.13%

Zinc                         23.11 mg/kg

Lactobacillus Acid Bacteria   2,900,000 gram

Selenium                   0.31 mg/kg

In addition to the above, Raw Green Tripe also contains Vitamin E, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid, Choline, Magnesium, Sodium, Taurine and Copper.

Two options will be offered for this trial. Participants must be willing to adhere to selected option exclusively and to keep accurate notes on daily results:
Tripe as a Meal for 10 days   (or)  Tripe as a Meal for 3 weeks: Raw Green Tripe must be fed as a meal for 10 days or 3 weeks. Meal consists of 75% ground Raw Green Tripe + 25% of cooked, mashed sweet potato.  Green Tripe portion is 2% of the dog’s weight.

Formula Examples for Raw Green Tripe (RGT)+ Sweet Potato Meal

70lb dog x 2% RGT = 1.4

35lb dog x 2% RGT = 0.7

1.4 x 16oz = 22.4 oz

0.7 x 16oz = 11.2 oz

22.4 oz = 2.8 cups …so feed 3 cups RGT

11.2 oz = 1.4 cups …so feed 1+1/2 cup

3 cups ground RGT (1272 calories)

1.5 cups ground RGT (636 calories)

With 1 cup cooked, peeled & mashed sweet potato (232 calories)

With 1/2 cup cooked, peeled & mashed sweet potato (116 calories)

Total Daily Calories: 752
