Re: Golden Retriever puppy diagnosed with EPI
Our vet is concerned about using Tylan, as it sometimes is so bad tasting, they won't eat their food with it in it. Since he's already underweight. Here's our gameplan for the next week with the vets recommendations:
1. 3 cans of food a day in 4 meals. 1 3/4 teaspoon of Pancrezyme per meal.
2. We are halting on the flagyl and if his stools do not get better we do a course of Tylan starting at the end of the week.
3. We are transitioning him from Purina EN to Natural Balance Puppy Formula canned food with a 10% transfer each day. With us being fully off Purina EN in 10 days.
4. Still taking the Cobalequin for b12.
We are having another consultation on Friday to see where we are at.
Any and all thoughts and feedback are welcomed. Thanks

Thanks for the update. I looked at the ingredients for the puppy food. I still read brown rice and oat hulls . Is this the food?
As far as administering the Tylan, we put it in gel capsules and administer. It's not a big deal

Re: Golden Retriever puppy diagnosed with EPI
My vet isn't fully sold on the idea of grain free food at this point. With the Tylan has anyone on here had issues with the dog being picky with it and therefore not eating?
His stools today have been extremely dark brown(not black, but fairly close). We are still struggling to see anything better than a score 4-5 with stools.
Will update again soon. Thanks everyone

The grain in the food is what feeds the bacteria for SID to keep hanging on. Maybe you will be the lucky one.

Re: Golden Retriever puppy diagnosed with EPI
Is there any research that shows that with Grain Free food that I can show my vet?
I also talked to her about using Pancreatin from EnzymeDiane, and she doesn't think it will work as well.
I agree with all your thoughts here, but need almost proof to show to get my vet on board.
Thanks again

Re: Golden Retriever puppy diagnosed with EPI
Hi,
The problem with grain in food is that it can inhibit the pancreatic enzyme activity from anywhere between 0% to 50%..... Most of our dogs have problems with grain. There is a LOT of research that supports this throughout the research publications on this website.... (however, here is one https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3132852/ specifically with treatment failures, which is what we address here on Epi4Dogs: (see below Treatment Failure) and the EPI minipig study, on this page: https://epi4dogs.com/fiber-in-the-diet/ which alsos alludes to fiber triggering SID/SIBO... and this is why we strongly suggest going with low fiber commercial foods (or home-made foods) and adding your own and appropriate fiber (like pumpkin, sweet potato and or slippery elm) to the diet in the right amount and it is the right source. With pet foods, you have no control over the type of fiber in the product and the amount. In most cases, commercial foods with grain just causes issues for the EPI dog.
Regarding Flagyl, that is what they used to use, but it didn't work very well on too many EPI SID (small intestinal dysbiosis cases) hence why they started using Tylan (Tylosin Tartrate 100 grams) if your vet has access to Topics in Companion Animal Medicine, the entire issue (2012 -fall time) is dedicated to EPI and the pancreas and all this info is in there....
But here is one from Dr. Elias Westermarck regarding the use of Tylan .
Regarding the B12 oral pill, Cobalaquin, this oral pill is suggested via a study by with TAMU and based on this research (first research listed on this page) https://epi4dogs.com/b12-researchpublications/.... It should work... but in case it doesn't work, then i would suggest changing to a different oral B12 made with 1000mcg Methylcobalamin version of B12, 40mg Intrinsic Factor and 800mcg Folate.... we have noticed that Cobalaquin works, but there have been cases where it doesn;t, and when that happens, we have seen much better luck with the WOnderlabs Pet factor B12 https://www.wonderlabs.com/itemleft.php?itemnum=K9688 (here is an actual case of WOnderlabs product: https://www.wonderlabs.com/blog/the-epi ... n-shepherd

Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Re: Golden Retriever puppy diagnosed with EPI
My vet was not sold on supplementing B12, grain free food or Tylan at first. After showing them all of the research and recommendations on this website they partnered with me in treating my dog. We now have lengthy discussions and I bring in my research - I always let them know what I'm thinking/planning and ask if it's not harmful to my dog why not try it. My vet now asks me questions on how to properly manage EPI.
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.

That is great. Good job now you can educate your vet as you learn!

Re: Golden Retriever puppy diagnosed with EPI
We have found that Enzyme Diane's Pancreatin is an excellent product. When Kolby was diagnosed 9 years ago, we began treatment with the extremely expensive commercial enzymes from our vet, and then the brands we could get online. We were very nervous about switching to Enzyme Diane because Kolby reacted negatively to every little change......and this would be a big change. But with encouragement from all the members who used her enzymes, we decided to give them a try and we couldn't be happier. There were no ill effects at all, the enzymes were very effective, Kolby had no negative reaction, and we have been using them ever since.
And we saved lots and lots of $$$
With each shipment, Diane sends you the breakdown of Lipase, Protease, and Amylase in your shipment.
