This is a hot topic! Help with this stench 🤮

Post by CD214 » 28 Feb 2021, 14:57

Hi!

Bodey is doing good. Weight is good. Here is his regimen:

1.5 c Hills i/d low fat 2x/day
Enzyme Diane 8x 1 tsp 2x/day
Wonderlabs B12 2 tablets 1x/day
1.5 (30mg) Omeprazole 2x/day
Tylan powder 1/4 tsp 2x/day
1 Carafate 2x/day
Fish oil
Green Mussel powder for joints

He has this AWFUL smell coming from his rear. When i bathe him, it’s gone for a couple days but comes back. It appears as if an oil-like substance leaks. It’s not the anal gland smell and it doesn’t smell like an infection. It smells like diarrhea, but it lingers and gets all over his beds and our carpet. When i wipe with a baby wipe, the liquid is brown and oily.

Could this be his food? What are your other suggestions? He did not tolerate Slippery Elm Bark and his poops have been good for the most part. Solid and small.

Help!

Cate, I think you are giving one too many B12 capsules per day, but I don't think that could be the cause of Bodey's leaking bum.

I don't often see that particular kibble listed as being ideal, low fat is not recommended. You can check out food suggestions here: https://epi4dogs.com/dog-food-options/

Poor Bodey.
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Thank you! I am calling the vet tomorrow to see what they say about food. They only have a couple of EPI cases so it’s relatively new for them. Ideally, we want a low fiber, grain free food right?

And the b12 calls for 2 capsules due to his weight. We can definitely cut back to one. Thanks for the suggestion!

, that sounds like he might need his glands expressed....... have the vet check his anal glands............

Yucky! If his weight and poop is very good, get back onto normal food, low fibre and grain free. Hills is chicken, rice and barley . You will probably find that your vet is unable to suggest brands. They don’t have practical experience with epi diets. I’m sure members on here will give recommendations for your locality. Changing one thing at a time is recommended, at least for a week, to see if it’s ok. How much fish oil are you using. My dog leaked with oily supplements. Later she also needed anal glands expressed.
Best wishes, Patsy
Springer spaniel Marti had Epi, PLE , MMM just to confuse me. She lived till 12yrs, chubby and happy despite eight years of epi.
Capsule enzymes suited her best. B12 supplements made her into a new dog!
After a cocker with PLN kidney disease, I now have two healthy rescues, a lively, suicidal , small ginger terrier, adopted with pneumonia, and gum disease needing nearly all his teeth out, and a fluffy grey toy poodle/terrier from Greece.
