Hi Jean,

I have been MIA as well. I've been in and out of the hospital and so has Barney (my other Americocker) who's had a chronic ear infection since September last year. Nothing has even touched it, despite daily ear washes and medications (he's had the whole chemist in his ears). It caused thickening which is apparently very common in the breed because their skin renews every 7 days, so reactions to infections are fast and aggressive. He's now having to have his ear canals removed which is just devastating, but we can't leave him in pain any longer. My poor babies really are going through the mill.

WRT the test, different vet so quite possibly a different lab which may account for the uptick.

She's doing okay. xxx

well I have never heard of ear canals being removed !

but this is interesting especially for dogs with flap ears

https://willows.uk.net/specialist-servi ... ssue/teca/

one of the problems with EPI it creates auto immune issues especially in the ears, Kara struggled with it most of her life, we had to use Prednisone which helped

let us know
My name is Jean we live in Liverpool in Uk

I am the Forum Director which I am very proud of

My Kara born 21 July 2009 diagnosed with EPI by cTLI test August 2010 TLI = <1...folate 14 Cobalamin 408, shot down to 94, b12 injections every other day

Lowest weight 39 pounds

We used Panzym enzymes, Tylan and Chemeyes b12 capsules

Sadly, on 10th May 2019, we lost her to DM

There are a few pups on the Vestibular FB page who have had the ear canal removed due to inner ear infections. They seem to get along ok.
Good luck and keep us updated.

I have never heard of ear canals being removed either. What our pups have to go through! I hope this helps Barney. And I hope you are feeling better also. When it rains, it pours, doesn't it?

Let us know how you and Barney are doing.

Hi everyone,

Barney is doing well after the ear ablation. I'd never heard of dogs having their ear canals removed either - it came as a huge shock that they would put a dog through that. But apparently these infections, deep inside the tissue, never go away. The dog remains permanently in chronic pain and are put down if owners can't afford the surgery. Fortunately, we have great insurance (I would have remortgaged the house before putting him down - he's my hairy child).

They said he would be deaf but he isn't - he can hear me just fine! I just have to talk a little louder.

So it turned out to be the best thing for him, even if it seemed a terribly drastic thing to do. Once the wounds are healed he will be out of pain and - they say - a different dog, back to his old nutty self!

And yes, Barb, it never rains!!

My first GSD had both ear canals removed due to chronic ear infections. I felt horrible but for her it was a great relief.

Glad Barney is doing well!

Do their lose their hearing?
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

I'm pretty sure Heidi already had some degree of hearing loss before the surgery but it was worse after. She didn't respond to the door bell or thunder after the surgery. She used to be so afraid of storms and this surgery was a blessing in disguise for her.

She had bad allergies and despite being under the care of a dermatologist for years she developed polyps (if I remember correctly) in her ears.

"Many pet owners expect their dog’s hearing to be reduced after surgery, due to the removal of the ear drum. This is definitely a possibility, but is not always the case. In many cases, the ear canal is so diseased by the time a surgery such as TECA-BO is being considered that owners notice little change in their dog’s ability to hear after surgery."
