I guess that sounds right. I'm not sure Piper's other meds would interfere the way antibiotics do, but just to be safe, why not?
I can't remember if you are just starting out, but if so, probiotics should be introduced gradually. I think it took me four or five days to work up to the whole capsule.---P
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

She has been on them for a while now but we think her rice is giving a belly ache and her stool is soft, not diarrhea as it holds its shape. Vet mentioned giving probiotic at a later time. We switched to 2 Tbl of cooked old fashioned oatmeal. I do not like the consistency. Stool still the same. I have barley but am unsure if I want to try that too. I will go a day or two with no grains. If I need to I can add in barley. I only add a little not a lot as vet wants grains which I may just stop.

Piper has been doing great however last week she was given some treats that threw her stool off. She had diarrhea. Since then no treats and while the diarrhea is gone her stool is still soft and a bit slimy. So the vet put her on metronidazole. That really has not done much so she has prescribed Tylan powder. I am to give her 1/2 tsp once a day mix in with food.

My question to you all here is... How long should she stay on Tylan? Also once you give Tylan is it true that dogs usually need to stay on it?

Any and all info on this is greatly appreciated. I am picking up the medication later today or tomorrow morning.

Tylan should be given for 45 days, then wean off slowly. Here are the dosing guidelines https://epi4dogs.com/antibiotics/ .

ALL dogs with EPI have SID, and managing it may involve a series of trials and errors. Tucker needs 1/16th teaspoon 2X day, plus a small amount of slippery elm, in order to maintain. That said, a couple of times a year SID will flare up---lots of gas & looser stool, and we will have to run a 45 day therapeutic course of Tylan. Some dogs can do with slippery elm alone, or with Proviable added to the SE.

The good thing is, Tylan doesn't kill good gut bacteria.

Thank you Pam. That does help. I actually read on the SID Antibiotic page about placing the tylan in a capsule. So I will be getting some vegetarian ones from the local pharmacy as Piper is allergic to chicken and I do not want to chance it... I will fill my own with 1/8 tsp each. Piper is 50lbs and my vet says 1/4 tsp but I think I will begin with 1/8th.

I do give Proviable daily now but what are thoughts on a Prebiotic? Can I buy just a prebiotic? If not what Pre and Pro combos do you recommend?

Piper's stool on the Tylan has gotten better. I was told to stay on the Tylan (1/8tsp BID) for a full week of good stool and then a full week after and then go to 1/8tsp daily for a week and then off.

But I still have a question regarding making our own sweet potato treats without a dehydrator using the enzyme. Anyone?

Lastly, what Slippery Elm are you using and where can I get it? I want to have it in the house. I want to add fiber to her meal. They want her to have grains and I do notice if I add too much rice Piper gets more of an upset belly or pukes it all up in the middle of the night so I have taken that out. However I want to add some type of fiber to her diet. Any suggestions?

Shawn---

I am so sorry I didn't answer your question about prebiotics, but I see you have learned about slippery elm.

I buy it on Amazon. Wonderlabs powder, and as they say, sometimes less is more. Tucker does well on 1/2 the recommended dose. --Pam

Hi Shawn is this the first course of Tylan? The first course is normally 45 days long at the proper dose 2x/day. Unless there are different circumstances? I would go with your vets dose of 1/4t 2x/day. The 1/8 t is more for a 30 lb dog.

The vet actually wanted a quarter teaspoon once a day however I split it into two because I could not fit that much into one capsule and it seems to be working well
