I give slippery elm daily.

And, you are doing the right thing, giving Tylan twice a day. The dose Jill posted.

It can be VERY confusing at first. Try and remember to write down what you do & the result. It really does help, and things get less confusing, too!

We are here for you, and we're glad you're here!

Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Thank you. If it were not for this forum I would be in the dark. It has helped me and Piper tremendously.

Question about the Slippery Elm. I have ordered it and in reading I am to give 1/2 scoop for a 50lb dog. It states to give with food. Can this be mixed in with her food along with the enzymes as well? I just want to do it correctly.

I'm with you. My vet knew nothing about EPI, and the vet she sent me to retired two months after he diagnosed Tucker. This place has saved us!---P

Received my Wonderlabs Slippery Elm Bark Powder. Piper does appear to get some indigestion...she will lip her lips and move her head at times like she may want to burp. Also her stool has been back to normal for a week now. Still on 1/8 tsp tylosin a day for another week or so.

I have a few Questions...

1) When should I be giving it to her and how? Can it be mixed with her food and enzymes?

2) Should it be given daily as a Supplement?

3) It states 50ls is 1/2 a scoop. Piper is 50.2lbs. Should I give less to begin?

4) Will this have side effects to watch for?

Lastly, is there anything else I need to watch or do?

Shawn, I don't think there are side effects of slippery elm. Tucker takes half the recommended dose, so I guess my personal suggestion would be yes, to start by giving less. They are always saying that sometimes less is more, with this herb.

I mix the whole shabang together. B12, enzymes, slippery elm, Tylan, kibble. Add about 3/4 cup room temp liquid (Tucker weighs 80, so you may not need that much liquid), and marinate it. Tucker will eat anything, and has never turned his nose up to the enzymes & meds. I have never asked whether it's OK to mix it all, but it seems to have worked fine.

Hope things go well---Pam

Piper's food is already wet-ish since it is made to order. I don't think water will be good in it. I mix her enzymes in it and she gobbles it up. I will try to add the SE in it as well . If needed I will add some drops of water to moisten it.

Unless I have to mix well with water then I will have to see what to do. I know most give dry food. I give her www.thefarmersdag.com food. Hence, Another reason why I get confused

Shawn---I see!

What I have read about slippery elm is, it thickens as it gets wet, hence the need for some water. You wouldn't want it to expand in her throat. Maybe mix it separately & then add it to the farmer's dog food & enzymes....Or, mix it with a yummy liquid & see if she will lap it up. Doesn't need to be much. Instead of water, I use homemade turkey wing broth at room temp, and Tuck gobbles it up. I also mix everything together, but not everybody does.

When it's time to stop the Tylan, you will want to do that gradually, like over several days or a week.---Pam

Yes Tylan I am weening her off. I am down 1/8 tsp once a day and will go to every other and then off. That should take another week or so to do. I did notice her stool (looking at the Poop Chart here) she is a #1. Hard pieces. So I added a little miralax to her food this morning. That is what the vet had me doing when it was hard. But I will now use the SE. I think I will try mixing it in with a little 0% Plain Greek Yogurt. If she likes it I will feed that and then give her dinner. If she does not like that I will try a little beef broth. If her food was dry I would do it all together. I just do not know how it will mix with her food now. ANd it is so hard because of her food allergies.

What we wont do for our furry children. I know I would do anything needed as I am sure other here would too. :)

Hi Shawn.
Both of my dogs will lap it up plain from the bowl. I mix the dose with warm water and let set about a minute. You could also syringe it in .

Great to know. I will try it. I also assume that I need to give it at each meal or just one?

THANK YOU TO ALL that have the patience to listen, read and answer all my questions!
