flies/maggots
this is a weird kind of side effect of having a dog with EPI. first of all Jasper is doing great now. Almost has regained all of his weight but ever since he started on his enzymes, I noticed an unusual number of flies that gather on his poop pile immediately after he goes. nothing like this before he got sick. I clean up the yard each day by shoveling his poop into a small garbage pail lined with a plastic bag. each week I remove the plastic bag and put in the garbage can for the garbage man to pick up. In the plastic bag, now, but never before, there are large numbers of maggots just teaming in the poop. I know disgusting. Anyone else have this experience? I'm curious if it is because of the enzyme powder now added to his food or because of something to do with the EPI conditions.
Re: flies/maggots
Have you seen any undigested food in the poop?
Has your pup been tested lately for internal parasites?

Re: flies/maggots
no undigested food and yes a full blown poop test in the last few weeks, makes me think the enzymes are the attractant.

Re: flies/maggots
Not sure about what causes flies to love poop, but maybe there are just more flies now because of the temperatures?
BUT, I would suggest, unless you are opposed to using bug spray, to spray in that bin every day or so, hopefully it will kill anything trying to live in it. Or maybe pour some bleach in there?
I know they can be really hard to get rid of, but the new bag each week should give a 'fresh' start!
Maggots are the worst, so best luck to you. ---Pam

Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Re: flies/maggots
i would like to suggest to have your dog tested for internal parasites.... and also....... if the food is not being thoroughly digested .... for example..... if you are not using the right kind of enzymes, or if you are not using the right amount of enzymes with each meal, everything is not being properly absorbed.
the other thing that may be going on is that your dog has uncontrolled SID that needs to be addressed. All dogs with EPI have SID (small intestinal dysbiosis) ...our objective as EPI caretakers is to keep SID under good control as best we can. This is achieved via:
1. giving prebiotics
2. if that doesn't work, giving pre+probiotics
3. if that doesn't work, start a course of Tylan antibiotic. DO NOT give metronidazole(Flagyl) for SID.
We have had cases that the owner was able to tell when SID was getting out of control because birds would start zooming in on the dog's poo........
Sometimes it is the food that is being fed, although it might be a good food, just isn't optimal for that particular EPI dog and in turn, you are doing everything right, but the food, while not optimally agreeing, is encouraging SID to be out of control.

Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........
