GSD will not eat before noon

Post by Pfg » 04 Sep 2021, 12:30

My 15 month old Male German Shepherd with EPI does not like to eat in the morning. By noon or 1pm he’ll eat a bit and then generally eats it all at 6pm dinner time. Any thoughts?

Hi. As long as he is happy with that schedule and doesn’t have the empty tummy syndrome in the morning, I would let him keep it. If he is getting all his calories and keeping his weight on, and you can manage his feeding times, I don’t see any reason not to feed him when he wants to eat…….as long as you are incubating 20 minutes before you feed him, right? Not way ahead of time. You don’t want the enzymes sitting on the food for long periods of time. Just push the whole process up to when he will want to eat.

you never ever get a GSD that fits into a schedule

how much are you feeding over the day , so long as its enough and as Barb said he doesnt have rumbling tum etc then ...........one of mine would only eat once daily, and a snack later on towards bedtime, we always gave scrambled egg and mashed potato as the late evening meal, all enzymed a far as Kara was concerned
My name is Jean we live in Liverpool in Uk

My Kara born 21 July 2009 diagnosed with EPI by cTLI test August 2010 TLI = <1...folate 14 Cobalamin 408, shot down to 94, b12 injections every other day

Lowest weight 39 pounds

We used Panzym enzymes, Tylan and Chemeyes b12 capsules

Sadly, on 10th May 2019, we lost her to DM

Thanks for the thoughts. He needs 5 cups per day to maintain his 70 lbs. I don’t want to give him lots in one meal. Too much kibble. Also, I try to organize his feeding around his playing and training. He is very energetic and I don’t want him twisting his gut…have been through that. With 6 previous GSD’s, he is the only one with this issue. I am convinced that it has something to do with his EPI..maybe makes his gut feel funny in morning. Who knows!

So then you know to avoid bloat by not exercising before or after eating, Right? And, not to add too much liquid to a meal? What if you feed him half his food at dinner & then the rest an hour later, with something irresistible on top?

Or, could you place a dollop of cottage cheese, tuna, sardines, or parmesan cheese on the food in the morning, to see if it gets his juices flowing? My non-EPI hound won't eat in the morning unless I put some canned food on top.

Apologies if you know, and have tried all this already!---Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Our Kolby bloated and had to have emergency surgery. It sounds like you went through it, too. Our assistant vet at the time told me that a friend of hers was told to give Gas-X to her dog to prevent gas build up. She did it and never had another issue. She gave it after the morning and evening meal but we only had problems after the evening meal, so we gave Kolby one gel cap after his evening meal. We never had another problem.

Of course, you might want to run this by your vet, first, but I just thought I would pass this along …..anything to avoid bloat.
