Hello! New to this group as my dog Rae (5 yr old lab mix) was diagnosed with EPI 4 months ago. This site has been incredibly helpful! The good news is that after getting Rae on enzymes, and a round of antibiotics and B12 shots, she now probably belongs in the Chunky Monkey Club and is doing well. I am still trying to figure out how we offer treats though. I've been mixing enzymes into canned food and freezing it in an ice cube tray - those seem to please Rae, and work well for her. I'm trying to figure out though a replacement/fix for the Greenies we used to give for breath/dental. Her breath is pretty atrocious right now, but I'm sure the Greenie on its own is going to upset her system. Any recommendations on breath & EPI-friendly treats?
Thank you!
Sara

Breath/Dental Treat replacements?
Mom to Rae & Lucy. Rae is a 5 yr old lab mix diagnosed with EPI in July 2021 - now our little butterball after regaining weight! Lucy is a 1 yr old non-EPI doberman mix.
Re: Breath/Dental Treat replacements?
Can you brush her teeth with enzymatic dog paste? I use Petsmile steak flavored paste. You can apply it with long dental swabs you buy, I either use my finger or baby tooth brush. They make water additives also.

Nikki gets OraVet chews 2-3 times a week right after her dinner and we never had an issue.

Re: Breath/Dental Treat replacements?
Is it possible for you to use a product like Healthy Mouth, which goes in the water dish? I've done this with my cats, but as Montgomery has decided that he does not need to consume water to live (he gets it with his enzymes and in his wet food), I'm not sure what effect it would have on an EPI pet. I know that the rest of the crowd all drank it just fine, though. No complaints. I used to use the paste, too, on a Q-Tip with one cat and it was very effective. That said, there are a great number of products that can go into the water dish, though some are only designed to make your pet lick their mouths and don't really do anything for dental heath beyond that, so do some research.
Montgomery was born 20 March 2012. He eats extra lean ground chicken, lean ground pork and lean ground beef completed with Alnutrin and freeze-dried chicken liver, with hard-cooked egg. He gets two size zero capsules of Enzyme Diane's enzymes at each of his six meals, and a size four capsule of Tylan three times a day. He's a fierce little Spitfire with a roaring Merlin engine.

My vet recommends using the rough gauze pads and rubbing it gently along the teeth where it meets the gum line - my dog is not a fan though LOL LOL
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.
