Happy Update & Two Questions

Post by RosietheRedLab » 05 Jan 2022, 11:30

I wanted to provide an update on Rosie! She was diagnosed in August 2021, about 2 weeks after we adopted her. She'd been a stray at least 3 times and was a shell of a dog. I'm happy to say with this site and forum, she's up from 39 pounds to 52 pounds as of January 2022! Putting her on a daily low dose of Tylan and feeding her Sport Dog Elite Sporting Dog food has really helped her over the final weight gain and great poops hump. Her personality is also starting to emerge--she tears around the backyard like crazy, begs for pets by throwing her paws up in the air, and is my shadow. Our little terror of a terrier has also accepted her into the family, as evident in the picture. :D Still a ways to go--she's very afraid of my husband/men in general and is terrified by sudden movements and noises.

Now my hopefully quick questions. Slippery elm by itself didn't do the trick for Rosie, whereas Tylan has helped noticeably. Is it worth continuing the slippery elm? We're about out of our jar, so wondering whether to reorder or not...

Rosie had severe acid reflux/bulking/hacking. We started her on 20 mg omeprazole 30 minutes before her morning and evening meals, which has helped significantly. However, she still has hacking episodes primarily an hour or so after her evening meal, and it doesn't sound very comfortable for her. Any suggestions here?

YEA, Rosie! What a great report. My female Maltese wouldn't let my husband pick her up for two years, so I know exactly where you're coming from.

Your questions are good ones. Tucker also needs a pinch of Tylan each day. I tried slippery elm alone, and it wasn't enough, so I give him just a tiny bit, plus Tylan. I do think his poops are better when I use SE, but if I had to stick with only one of them, I'd choose Tylan. He takes Proviable, too. Have you tried it?

I believe I have read here on the forum, that bulking may be related to SID, which you are working on with the Tylan & slippery elm.

Take Care---Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Love the picture. I would probably go with just the Tylan after the SE is done. You can eventually cut back to a minimum dose that keeps SID at bay and remember to keep the B12 upper range.

Not sure about the hacking what is he usually doing before it happens?

Since Slippery Elm is inexpensive... i'd order another jar, just to have some on hand (BTW... people use it too!) but if the Tylan is working, then i would stick with that.
You may or may not need a small maintenance dose going forward... you will have to pay it by ear and just see what happens each dog is "unique".

However... that being said, Pam made a great suggestion about using a probiotic.... have you tried Proviable or Visbiome?

Thanks for all the input! Seems like a good idea to have the SE on hand, and if we stop using it and she remains stable, it's not a big $$ loss.

Interesting that the hacking might related to SID as well, makes sense. It happens regardless of what sort of activity she's doing, both laying down or standing up. It's more the timing that is consistent. We haven't tried Proviable--sounds like that will be our next step and fingers crossed we see further improvement!

Slippery elm is a great thing to have in the house. We had a bout of corona virus go through the house a few years back and it was a godsend having that little pouch around. It did every cat in the house who fell ill for the duration of their illness and kept everyone a lot happier and healthier. I've taken it on occasion, too. Its very effective. A wonderful thing to have in one's medicine chest.

He gets two size zero capsules of Enzyme Diane's enzymes at each of his six meals, and a size four capsule of Tylan three times a day. He's a fierce little Spitfire with a roaring Merlin engine.

ABOUT PROVIABLE---Start SLOwly, opening the capsule & giving less than half the contents, then building up to the full capsule once a day by the end of the week. Otherwise, you will probably give her the squirts, and by now Rosie is really done with having the squirts.

thanks V for the plug about SLippery Elm for humans....

a long time ago i told my vet about it.... he had not heard of slippery elm so needless to say i went on and on about how great slippery elm is ... in many cases. So he had an IBD patient, suggested SLippery Elm and the loose stools stopped and the client was very happy. Fast forward to a few months later, this vet went to a conference and he had bad stomach cramps with loose stools.... so he emails me to tell me that there was a holistic store right next to his hotel so he went in and purchased some loose slippery elm powder and took some with a cup of tea.... he said that his loose stools stopped within 30 minutes, cramps went away and he was able to attend the conference. After this incidence he started recommending SLippery Elm to any of his clients that had loose stool issues. :)

That's wild! I'm glad he put the treatment to the test. It certainly is a gentler treatment for stomach complaints than a lot of things out there...
