Hi Every one, my name is Paola and my pet's name is Patacon, we are from Colombia, we discover he has EPI 6 months ago, and after some research, I started to give him daily digestive enzymes from Ampel nutrition with each meal, he doesn't like it too much but he stared to do very well after these. sometimes he doesn't want to eat I guess bc of the taste of it and those moments he starts to eat big amounts of grass.

Recently his tools don't look well, he lost his appetite, then he had bouts of vomiting and a lot of pain in his stomach, because what a had read here I think is SID (I'm not sure), the vet here in Colombia are not very familiar with EPI, so they recommend Metronidazole for 5 days, I'm scared of giving this to him bc of what I have read here... I ask the vet if we can give him tysol instead, and he said it was too strong and he prefers metronidazole since is a small dose... I don't know what to do... I read about Slippery Elm but they don't sell it here, I found inulin fiber from chicory can I use that Instead ? or should I give him antibiotics?

Tylosin /Tylan is the antibiotic of choice as metronadazole can have neurological side effects called metronadazole toxicity, please talk to your vet about this, Tylan is a mild antibiotic and works well for SID what are you feeding ?

thanks for your answer, I feed him with ACANA, plus enzymes. I just put them on the food and mixed them that is all, I stopped giving him anything else since I don't know what can be bad for him, but he use to love bananas, carrots, blueberries.

Hey Paola, and welcome from Pam & Tucker in Florida!

From my limited Spanish, I am guessing tilosina is tylosin tartrate, which is Tylan. I looked it up, and again, my Spanish is poor, but what I was able to read reinforced my guess. Will your vet prescribe it? Most of us get it through prescription, but there are places to get it without one.

My idea would be to ask your vet for it, or ask where you can get some. It is for veterinary use, so it makes sense it would be used on farm animals. Pigeons, too.

You asked about using "inulin fiber from chicory " YES!!!! that is also a very good prebiotic for SID

Also.... Tylan is not stronger than Metronidazole...... it is a different antibiotic.... it is a macrolide antibiotic and therefor does not kill all the bacteria (good and bad) like Metronidazole does..............

Last night I received his test results so it seems his b12 is low too.

I don't think my vet will prescribe tylan, I talked to him and he seems upset that I reach for info on my own and that I don't want to follow his instructions, so maybe it's time for us to look for someone else.

@pam : thank you I try to do my best I can with my english.

@Olesia: do you know how to give it to him? amount or time...on his food? mixed with water ? ... does it replace tylan or they should be given in the same period of time? I was worry since I read it was fiber and EPI dogs should have low fiber diet. thanks for you help

the dosing for Tylan (Tylosin Tartrate Soluble powder/100 grams) is based on the dog's weight. DO not get the liquid injectable as that is for respiratory conditions. Here are the dosing instructions: https://epi4dogs.com/antibiotics/

CHicory root is loaded with inulin.... a prebiotic fiber.... if you can get some chicory root powder or inulin powder start with 1/8 tsp over the course of a week... see how things go and then if all goes well, try increasing it to about 1/4 tsp or with a large dog you can give up to 1/2 tsp.

Prebiotics are wonderful but always start with just a little as too much can actually give loose stools rather than firm them up
