EPI symptoms

Post by ed33935 » 08 Oct 2018, 10:04

Has anyone here had a positive blood test for EPI and no symptoms other than weight loss? Is it possible for a dog to have EPI, and normal looking, formed stool, no vomiting ect?

Have not had the blood test yet and our vet is guessing we have EPI, but other than weight loss, no one of the above symptoms.

The only definitive test to diagnose EPI is with the 12 hr food fast test called cTli. At least you will know what you are treating or not. There are a lot of conditions that have symptoms that are suggestive of EPI.
My name is Jill and we live on the Hood Canal in Washington State. We currently have 2 Jack russells, TJ is 8 and Sadie is 2.

Mickey and his pancreatitis brought me to Epi4dogs.com site in 2012 to help manage it.
He lived from 6/99 - 8/2014

Mickey, Jack Russell. Chronic Pancreatitis. Dianes enzymes, 1/8t 3x/day with meals.

My boy's only symptom for months was very very slow weight loss. After about 3mos he had lost a total of 20lbs, he had perfect poop the whole time until the very end all of a sudden diarrhea and then the SID. So yes, an EPI dog can have good poops. When are you going to get the test? Be sure your dog is fasted for at least 12hrs and have the B12 and Folate tested at the same time.
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.

Hi! Yes, as been said you a pup can have EPI and perfect poops. We have 2 dogs with EPI and Pharaoh was dx first and included all the classic symptoms, including bad poops. Taikos (14 months older and his half sibling) had perfect poops and had always been on the thin side...she has REALLY bad hips so the vet didn't want her to weigh too much. When she started eating (not chewing, eating) the plastic tube of my vacuum cleaner I took her to be tested: yup low B12 and EPI. She just turned 12 and is doing well with her EPI (her hips are still the pits though). So if the vet suspects EPI I would go ahead and test for EPI, B12 and folate. Let us know what the actual numbers are (some dogs can be headed to EPI but the values are not quite there yet and a vet will say all is fine...and it's not).
Currently 2 Shiloh Shepherd Pups! Two Shilohs that passed over the Rainbow Bridge.
Taiko was born 6 September 2006 and had EPI; she passed over the Rainbow Bridge 10 April 2019 NOT EPI-related.
Pharaoh born 24 November 2007 and had EPI. He passed September 2020 NOT EPI-related.
Moku born 15 April 2014 and was dx with EPI in January 2019.
Hoshi born 6 July 2019 and does not have EPI
Taiko and Pharaoh were half siblings through their sire; their sire is Moku's grandfather through his Mom. Moku and Hoshi have the same sire.
Moku uses PancreaPlus tablets and receives weekly B12 shots at home.

YES! Although the most common symptom is loose stools and then weight loss often follows... Some dogs have EPI and perfect stools.... and some never lose any weight......

As mentioned above... best to have the gold-standard test "TLI" blood test done to confirm EPI and not guess and cause unintended consequences.........
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........
