Horrible smelling beltches

Post by Susie » 11 Oct 2018, 22:09

Hi all, our 8 year old labradoodle has had diagnosed epi for nearly 2 years. She's been stable for a long while - eating raw food, with B12 supplements, and enzymes from Dianne. In the last month or two she's started having absolutely horribly smelling burbs. She seems quite fine aside from this. Has anyone experienced this with their dog before?

Yep.... that most likely is SID (small intestinal dysbiosis) becoming uncontrolled... what you are smelling is most likely putrefaction..... or your pup has a dental issue going on (might want to check for this too just in case it is not EPI related.... but odds are that this is SID)

Since your gal has been treated for EPI with the proper "pig" enzymes...... and has been doing fine for a few years already and then this happened ... the first thing i would try is increase the enzymes by a pinch (1/8 tsp) and give it a week and see if the horrible smell decreases...... if not.... then the other couple of things is to either try a prebiotic (like slippery elm powder...or something like it).... OR... you could talk to your vet and try a course of Tylan antibiotic powder to treat the SID

There is underlying problem which means something is out of whack....it could be that the current food composition really is not agreeing 100% with your pup and you might want to look at changing it.... or it could be that the pup's B12 is slipping and you need to look at the B12 supplementation.... just know that the best thing is to try these suggestions one-at-a-time ... give things a week to see if whatever you tried appears to help or not. If not, then move on to the next thing to try... and repeat.

Please keep us posted!

Hi! You might want to check your dog's food to make sure they haven't changed the ingredients. I just found out after weeks of diarrhea that my boy's dog food ingredients have changed. If it hasn't changed then I would follow Olesia's suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I realized too that we just switched to prepping more than one meal at a time about 3 months ago.....So that could be having a negative effect on her too.

If the sensible suggestions don’t clear it up, do ask the vet to check for other reasons. I thought my cockers bad breath was a dental infection, but it was in fact a kidney problem . It’s a foul fishy smell.. The young vet I saw had failed to diagnose it until he had a pre-.dental op blood test. His teeth were fine too.
Springer spaniel Marti had Epi, PLE , MMM just to confuse me. She lived till 12yrs, chubby and happy despite eight years of epi.
Capsule enzymes suited her best. B12 supplements made her into a new dog!
After a cocker with PLN kidney disease, I now have two healthy rescues, a lively, suicidal , small ginger terrier, adopted with pneumonia, and gum disease needing nearly all his teeth out, and a fluffy grey toy poodle/terrier from Greece.

Oh wow.... Patsy.... i had no idea that a kidney issue could cause bad breath smell..... good to know

And Jean.... i LOVE the charcoal biscuit suggestion..... there are charcoal biscuit recipes for dogs on line..... great idea!!!

Susie... that could indeed be the underlying cause.... sometimes the least little change in these dog's "regimen" can trigger an uncontrolled SID episode.

Hopefully this is the cause ... please keep us posted!
