What about training treats

Post by Kzh » 05 Nov 2018, 14:24

Hi. I have a question. What do you guys do for training? I usually give treats but because of EPI I assume that it is not wise to give treats right?
2nd question - I give the enzyme with his meal. 10 or 15 minutes later will the enzymes still be effective if I give him more food? How long does it last?

Check out our treat page. https://epi4dogs.com/treats/ WHen an EPI dog is first diagnosed, if possible, it is best NOT to give treats in between meals. However... if you have to give treats... go with pure protein, try very very tiny pieces only, try to give within an hour after an enzymed meal. ONce the dog is consistently stable ... for about a month... that is when we suggest trying "treats".
For training..... some make a mush with food and enzymes, put in a squeeze bottle and squirt a blob of treat in their mouth as a reward :)

It will depend on your pup exactly how much and with what he can cheat :) with treats later with no enzymes....

Yes... if you give food 15 minutes AFTER they eat an "enzymed" meal... it should be fine with "most" EPI dogs..... unless your dog is super sensitive. The only way to find out is to try giving a little food 10-15 minutes afterwards and then watch the poo for a few days to make sure that didn't cause things to go south.....

Thank you Olesia. As always you are a great help. Zeus is 10 months old now and since he started those enzymes over a month ago he is a totally different pup. He is for once full of life. He plays, runs and chews everything in sight😜😜😜. He never used to do much except rest. I will be careful about the treats. Don't want to mess things up.
Thanks

That is great news to hear that he is feeling so much better now :)
Isn't it grand to see them play and have a good times once again once they get the right treatment for EPI.........untreated EPI really brings them down....

When my Izzy was finally diagnosed with EPI... we were in the middle of Schutzhund training.... the tracking segment.... i could only give her 1 piece of grain free kibble at a time with a maximum of 10 pieces total... or else she would have a blow out right on the track course. Other than tracking (food reward).... all other training i rewarded her by interacting with her and a "tuggy"... she LOVED it.

Love reading an update like this. It's beyond words when we see them returning to the dogs they should be once they start healing.

I would wait a few months before trying treats. My boy wasn't able to tolerate anything but his own enzymed kibble so I made a kibble jerky by grinding the food to a fine powder, adding enzymes and water as usual then using a jerky tool with my dehydrator to make kibble jerky strips.

If and when you do try treats, be sure to keep your detailed log and watch the poops, burping and gas to see if your pup can tolerate it.

Thankyou guys for all your great suggestions. But unfortunately things changed since I posted. Few days ago we got the dreaded Diarrhea again! So we are back to square one.

Hi Jean. Yes I do keep a diary. The things that was done differently is I have 1 tsp coconut oil a day before. Another is I went for a walk there was some muddy water from rain and he did drink a few licks. Could it be one of them?
