Heartworm positive and EPI

Post by lsporter » 28 Nov 2018, 16:16

Has anyone had any experience with a heartworm positive EPI dog ? When the vet was trying to find out what was wrong with Stewie last year, she came up positive for heartworm. She had had a negative test 6 months before, and every time prior to that, and has always been on revolution. She doesn't have any outward signs. Obviously I couldn't do anything about the heartworm when she was so sick and skinny from what we came to find out was EPI. Now that she is strong and healthy again, it's time to address the heartworm. Has anyone with an EPI dog had to put their pup through the heartworm treatment? I hear its pretty awful. Does EPI make it any worse? Thanks for any info.
Stewie was diagnosed in November 2017. She was a healthy 13 year old black chihuahua until July 2017 when she started losing weight, along with all the other horrible symptoms. She went from over 8 lbs. to 4.9 just before diagnosis. She was on metronidazole until she got sick from it.. Tylosin saved the day. She currently eats turkey & barley Science Diet 2x a day, 1/2 cup each feeding, with 1/2 tsp Enzyme Diane and a wonderlabs B12. Weighs around 6.9 lbs now.

YES!!!! No me personally, but we had a vet in FLorida that adopted a Great Dane that was emaciated with EPI and was riddled with Heartworm.... they actually treated her for Heartworm before she was fully stable with the EPI and she did great. It was scary when they initially started the Heartworm treatment because her EPI was no where near stable..... but they had no choice and like i mentioned, she came thru the ordeal and did great.

Since Stewie's EPI sounds like it is stable now (under good control) my guess is that it should be perfectly fine to take care of the Heartworm....
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

I do not have experience with an EPI dog with heart worms, but my first GSD had heart worms and went through treatment just fine. The only condition she had before heart worms were seizures. The heart worm treatment did not make her seizures worse. We did have to keep her very calm during treatment. No major exercise or excitement. Sounds like your pup is ready for treatment.
My name is Stacie and my girl's name is Dizzy. German Shepherd, Age 10-diagnosed 12/24/2011 at 55 pounds, current weight is 93 pounds.

Welcome! I do not have experience with Heartworm and EPI, but it sounds like your Stewie is ready for treatment.

Now that she is stable, you can proceed. Let us know how she does.

I don't have any personal knowledge of heartworm treatment other than through friends in rescue that have - keeping them calm and minimal activity is HUGE. When you start the treatment I highly recommend looking on FaceBook and join the Canine Enrichment group - there are LOTS of activities to keep their minds active even though their bodies need to be kept calm. Good luck and please do let us know how things go.
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.
