I would think you should see an improvement with the slippery elm within a few days 3-5. I'm glad you have an appointment set with your vet. Keep us posted on your little one.

Just wanted to say how adorable Zack is. Sorry I don't have any experience with little dogs. My girl used to have wet burps, but I give her pepcid with her evening meal and it seems to work for her. Definitely mention he is doing that with your vet on your next visit.
My name is Stacie and my girl's name is Dizzy. German Shepherd, Age 10-diagnosed 12/24/2011 at 55 pounds, current weight is 93 pounds.
Feeding Taste of the Wild 4 cups a day with Enzyme Diane 1tsp per cup. Wonderlabs b12 once daily.
Dizzy has Pannus, given Cyclosporine drops in each eye twice daily. Pepcid once daily. Apoquel for allergies once daily.

Hi Sorry to hear that little Zachery is still regurgitating a little bit after meals.... since you tried the slippery elm and that did not help (usually you notice an improvement within a couple of days--if it is going to help).... if you have not noticed any improvement, then i would stop the slippery elm... but do keep it on hand you just might need it in the future.

The brownish colored regurgitation sounds like it could be:
1. SID (small intestinal dysbiosis) or some sort of gut bacteria that might need treatment with a short course of antibiotic. My first suggestion would be to talk to the vet and ask him if he thinks Tylan would be appropriate.

2. THe next thing could be that the food that you have him on really doesn't agree with him and upsetting his tummy so, again, talk to your vet about this being a 2nd possibility and trying something else. Many times the prescription food just don't work with these EPI dogs and they do better with an over the counter dog food that is low fiber- -less than 4% no grain and with no peas or very little peas in the food.

3. HOWEVER..... and this ties in with the diet... i noticed that you mentioned that Zachery has seizures. There is recent research out on seizures with dogs and that they are discovering that a ketagenic diet often works better at controlling these seizure vs. seizure meds. We actually have a page on this with the research and the very cool thing about it is that the diet recommended is one that agrees with most EPI dogs! https://epi4dogs.com/seizures/ . Protein (meat) and medium chain triglycerides (MCT) which is usually coconut oil.... which is an MCT fat that seems to work with most EPI dogs. Anyway... just tossing this out there to you to maybe talk to your vet about.... a diet change to a ketagenic diet might (or not) help with 2 problems ... the regurgitating and the seizures. Might be worth looking into.

Thanks for the input. Regarding regurgitation. There seems to be a slight improvement. But hoping for complete decrease. He essentially is on the same prescription diet can food wise that he was getting when free feeding kibble. Fortunately he doesn't have frequent seizures, one last June when he was put on med., then only two this Nov. Vet conference on Monday.
Kathy Crocker, Cape Cod, MA, USA, Zack is a 6 year old, 10 lb., Pomeranian dx on Nov 6,2018 with TLI of 2.5 after month of yellow cow patty stool. Lost one pound. Stool converted to normal immediately, main issue gastric reflux. Currently on Royal Canin wet food with bits of kibble, ProcreaPlusPowder, Tylan pinch 2xday, B12 injection monthly, weening off compounded Omeprazole. Also receives twice daily Phenobarbital for history of seizures.

oh okay... that's good that he does not have lots of seizures. BUt also good to know that they are now finding that idiopathic seizures can often be better controlled with diet.

Just out of curiosity.. are you giving him any coconut oil? (the good stuff, not Lou Ann from Walmart) ??

If you are seeing a slight improvement... then my guess is that maybe the slippery elm has helped a little.. but.... with regurgitated brown liquid... in my experience, this is usually some sort of bacteria upset in the gut and does take a few days (i had to give Tylan to my gal when this happened to her) before it cleared up and it took a good handful of days even when on an antibiotic.... anyway.. glad you are meeting with the vet on Monday. That will be good. Please keep us posted.

Update. Not only did we review Zack’s status last week at which time he had an ultrasound as his gastric reflux continued despite a trial of an anti-emetic and then slippery elm. Tests were normal. Started on Omeprazole, and was able to get compounded liquid. Within 2 days things improved dramatically. We give it first thing in am without food. My vet also got her own consult with a GI specialist so we also changed Zack’s diet to Royal Canin’s gastrointestinal, low fat canned food which he likes. We also started Tylan for potential SBO and B12 injections even though his levels were normal. Poops are normal looking and in volume. It hasn’t been a month since dx so we are pleased with how things are going. He had lost a pound but stable at 10 lbs. we hope to increase the amounts of food at each of his frequent feeding so he gets back up to 11 lbs.

thanks for the good report and glad to hear that the Omeprazole is helping and that the vet started Zack on Tylan and B12. Sounds like your vet is really on top of things!

And very glad to hear that Zack likes the Royal Canin’s gastrointestinal, low fat canned food ...that is half the battle when they like a food that agrees with their gut situation. :)

Looking forward to hearing even more good news as time goes on.

Wishing you a wonderful Christmas and a very happy new year!

Hello fellow Pomeranian mommy!! I have a 7 pounder, 4 months shy of 15 years! You've been given excellent advice and just wanted to chime in to welcome you and wish you luck...you've found the best of the best here and they all saved my little Romeo's life about 5 years ago. I'm sorry, my profile didn't carry over from the previous website and I lost most of my detailed logs :(

What I can tell you is my Pom eats 3, sometimes 4 times a day and about 1/4 cup of food at each feeding. He has a choice of wet and dry...he chooses. I use Creon so I cannot contribute much to enzymes. My Pom had a lot of reflux in the beginning and Pepcid AC worked wonders (still does time to time). I split a 10mg tablet into 4 and I give him one tiny piece (2.5mg) as needed. But, if what you are doing works, please continue :)

Keep asking questions here, you are in amazing company :)

Suzy

PS...Olesia, is there a way to retrieve my profile from the old server?
Suzy - Greatful for finding this forum and meeting such nice and helpful people.

Romeo, DOB 04/23/2004- healthy weight 11.1 pounds (I should say overweight); EPI weight 5.8 Pounds :(..Currently 7.2 :)

11/18/13 results: TLI: 1.3 (5-35), diagnostic for EPI. Folate 17.2 (6.5-11.5). (Consistent with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or vitamin supplementation). Cobalamin 458 (249-733)

Pepcid AC, 2.5 mg as needed

Update 11/2/2016 started using Creon 10,000. Update 1/7/2017...the Creon is working. Gained almost a pound in one month! Keeping fingers crossed :)
