Periodic morning vomit (from Dana with Belle)

Post by Olesia711 » 09 Dec 2018, 09:34

Hi everyone,

For some reason, Dana (with EPI pup "Belle" had problems posting... so i am posting for her:

Hi. Once in awhile Belle will throw up her morning food. I thought it was because she would go and drink a bunch of water right after she ate, so I stopped her from doing that. But this morning she didn't guzzly a bunch of water after she ate and she just threw up a bunch of her morning kibble. This doesn't happen all the time but I would say it probably does happen about once a week. Anyone else having this issue? Any ideas why this might happen?
Thanks so much
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Dana,

we will need a few more details, like
1. how long has Belle had EPI for
2. and been on enzymes,
3. and how much enzymes per how much food is being given
4. and how are you preparing it???
5. is this a new batch of enzymes,
6. or a change in food?
7. how is she with SID.... reoccurs often, or never
8. has she ever been treated for SID
9. if so, with what and how long,
10. and most important.... which she upchucks, is the phlem around the food clear/white/foamy like... or.... is it yellowish?

we will need a few more details, like
1. how long has Belle had EPI for
She was diagnosed at 7 months old and is now 2 years 2 months old so 19 months.
2. and been on enzymes,
Been on enzymes since she was diagnosed
3. and how much enzymes per how much food is being given
She gets 2 1/2 cups food in morning and again in evening. Give 1 tsp per cup of food so I put 2 1/2 tsp
4. and how are you preparing it???
I mix the enzymes with a tiny bit of baby food sweet potatoes then add some warm water and then mix it into her food. I let it sit for 20 minutes then give to her.
5. is this a new batch of enzymes,
Yes this is a new batch but she was doing this with the other batch of enzymes as well.
6. or a change in food?
No change in food.
7. how is she with SID.... reoccurs often, or never
She had sibo really bad (I posted about it here on the forum) and I have her down to just 1/8 tsp every other day of tylan. Trying to stop the tylan.
8. has she ever been treated for SID
Yes see above
9. if so, with what and how long,
With tylan.
10. and most important.... which she upchucks, is the phlem around the food clear/white/foamy like... or.... is it yellowish?
It is More clear/white/foamy like but also the color of her food (brownish). Lots of her kibble in it. She does it not long after she finishes eating.
My Belle is a rescue. She was 3 mo when I adopted her and at 7 mo we discovered the EPI. Her TLI results were "0.4". We went to 3 Vets before we found the 4th vet who knew exactly what was wrong. What a relief! He put her on B12 and enzymes right away! I was so glad to find enzymediane! Belle gets 2 1/2 cups of food with 1 tsp of 8x enzymes twice a day. She is now (at 116 lbs) but now has SIDS. Started putting Slippery Elm in her breakfast (she would regurgitate breakfast & orange/yellow in poo) & she is doing great now!

Okay.... THANKS that was very helpful!

The last answer] "It is More clear/white/foamy like but also the color of her food (brownish). Lots of her kibble in it."

is most telling. this happened to us with my Izzy.

we typically are used to seeing either
1. clear / white /foamy... which is often bile or acid related which may (or may not be triggered by SID.... or
2. that yellow foamy stuff.... which is SID or some gut bacterial upset
3. however that brown (food colored/stinky vomit immediately after the meal) happened i freaked out... brought izzy to the vet, turned out that this too was a gut bacterial upset.

For us, we put Izzy back on Tylan until it cleared up (if i remember correctly it took a few days/week)

Based on what you are telling us.... i suspect this is SID or some other bacterial upset that she needs antibiotics for.
1. Maybe go back to a full dose of Tylan (or more substantial dose of Tylan) and see if this improves things over the course of a week........ or
2. contact your vet, explain what is going on.... and ask if they think you should try a different antibiotic............

Thank you so much! So helpful that you had an experience with this as well. I will up her Tylan and also contact her vet so he knows what is going on and in case he wants to try something else.

This doesn’t happen everyday but I will say that it is happening at least once a week lately. Is this how it was with Izzy?

with my Izzy.... she vomited her food back up with brown (yucky) liquid and it stunk too.... i had never seen it that way and i freaked out.... brought her in and must admit, the vet chuckled at me cause he knew i have been dealing with EPI for years and all the weird other things that go with it.... so he was kind of surprised that this freaked me out....but it did ........

Please keep us posted (hopefully she'll start to feel better soon).... and let us know what the vet says !

Hi Dana,

I am sorry that poor Belle is having difficulties, and glad that Olesia could help. One other little thing I would suggest is that you record everything in your log/journal again if you are not already doing that. Most of us keep a log at the beginning of treatment when we are dealing with trying to balance our pup's food, enzymes, anti's, and b12. There is so much to be aware of. Then when our pups improve and we get into a good routine, we usually stop recording things, which is fine. We found that when Kolby had setbacks, the journal came in handy again to see if what we were doing was working.

Good luck and keep us posted on Belle's progress. I hope she feels better.

we had this with Kara, and my vet said it was empty stomach syndrome,

so, we added a small meal just before bed, usually mashed potato, and scrambled egg

it might work for you

is there any bile in the vomit, if so then its possible thats what it is

First off are you treating with B12 ???
The other thought i have is try some slippery elm see if this helps , Maddie used to smack her lios but no bile then i added SE and this seemed to go away i only added 1/4 tsp at night...you are on tylan and this can inhbit absorption so i was thinking if you did a small supper as Jean has suggested you could add the SE then.
Maddie DX April 2011 along with low B12 she was feed with a low fibre food below 3% , fat was not restricted ( she wasnt good on pea based foods ) She initially had a course of B12 shots weekly over a period of 6 months and then we used the B12 pills from Chemeyes in the UK . We used Panzym and slowly had to increase the dose as she aged when she was first DX she was 23kg but she gained weight quickly and got back to 33 kg .
Maddie gained her angel wings in Jan 2018 at the age of 10 to a condition unrelated to EPI.
