I am assuming your vet meant that the folate was high? Cobalamin is B12. Can you give us the numbers for the cobalamin and for the folate?

Yep you’re right, it’s the folate that was high not the cobalamin. Sorry for the confusion! I didnt think to get the numbers from him today but I will find out what they were exactly.

Hi there. Sorry you are dealing with a set back. My first suggestion has already been mentioned which is to increase the enzymes a tad - maybe 1/8tsp. As for mouth sores, some members have found it helpful to feed on a flat plate, toss a few kibbles in the water bowl so they bob for them after eating, using a squirt bottle. If tweaking the enzymes doesn't help, you may be dealing with SID and need a course of Tylan.

Hi,
Glad you had the vet check her out.
I agree 100% with stopping the Cholestrymine and going back to the Pepcid AC (for now) .... thins kind of "rotation" with acid reflux meds often has to be done with these dogs.... especially when they are on them for an extended period of time.

I do think you should slightly increase the enzymes (try increasing by 1/8 tsp more with each meal)..... because i too think what might have happened, as mentioned above and this happened to us.... over time, some EPI dogs just don't process things as effectively s they did before and consequently need a pinch more enzymes as they age...... SO..... while this is happening (as we the owners have no idea that this is going on until we start seeing sloppy stools again).... SID/SIBO has gotten out of control... and that is why dog appears to be having a set back.

Again, i agree with your vet giving antibiotics... but.... my first preference would have been a course of Tylan, the Metronidazole would have been my 2nd choice, if the Tylan didn't work...

But, since you have the Metro, try it, fingers crossed it works... but if you do not see optimal improvement within 7 to 10 days, you might want to go back to the vet/call him and ask if you could swap out the Metronidazole for Tylan for the remainder of the course..........

Please keep us posted and let us know how things go.

Thanks everyone-I will add the 1/8 tsp to her food and try this antibiotic and hopefully start seeing some results in the next couple of days. Rotating these different treatments seems to make sense and I hope that will be a solution for the long term if this works. I will keep you updated, thank you again!

Hi, I'm a little late to the party, but better late than never! I see that you mentioned your dog is now getting mouth sores. You already got some good suggestions, like feeding on a flat plate, rinsing her mouth after she eats or giving her an ice cube, etc., but I also wanted to suggest something Olesia mentioned in a different thread. She recommended for those poor sore lips and mouth, if you have any vitamin E capsules, pop one with a pin and squeeze the vitamin e oil on the lips etc, it will help with the healing. The other thing I wanted to mention is that my Pixie is one of those dogs who has had to have her enzymes increased a couple times as she got older. We didn't have to increase a lot, but we did need to adjust it up twice now. I hope you're having some success getting her back on track!
