Long-Term Tylan use
Paige has never needed Tylan prior to July 2018. She had a bad episode of Pancreatitis which was probably brewing for awhile. During that tx, she needed Tylan for the first time to normalize her stools. Her stools have been 100% normal since starting on enzymes at 9 months of age. She will be 8 yo in a couple of months.
Paige is now on her 3rd round of Tylan in the past 8 months. She is on it for the 45 days, then tapers off. She is on the correct dose for a 100# dog at 3/8 tsp, 2x/day with meals. It works immediately to normalize her stools.
Now, I am wondering if she should just stay on the Tylan long term at a low dose to prevent SID from returning....
What do you guys think?

Re: Long-Term Tylan use
Hi Conny, I would find the lowest dose Tylan that keeps the poops solid. I did this with Mickey. I wish I would have known more about Slippery Elm with him I would have experimented a little.
I forgot, have you used SE?

Hi Conny
Jill gave you a great suggestion.....when the 3rd course of Tylan is complete.. instead of stopping completely you can try tapering down the Tylan dose (reduce in half morning & night) and after a week, try tapering this dose down to the half dose just once a day - -stay on this low maintenance dose and see if this is enough to stabilize the SID
OR
Start tapering down the Tylan... but also add slippery elm with each meal.... continue to taper down the Tylan .... 1/2 morning & night, and then the next week, give just that 1/2 dose Tylan daily, and then go to 1/2 dose Tylan every other day (for another week) and then give Tylan just twice a week for the final week... all the while you have her on the Slippery with each meal.....so when you stop after the final week of Tylan.... watch the poos and closly and listen to the gut ..... for any signs of SID getting out of control again..... and hopefully by giving the Slippery Elm while doing all this slow taper with the Tylan and then once of the Tylan completely done.... Hopefully..... the Slippery Elm is doing a good enough job so that she doesn't need to go back on the Tylan.................

Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

we have never been able to stop Tylan, Kara just goes downhill immediately, i brought this up with the University vets, and they said that because of the immune system being so compromised, basically you do what you have to,Kara is on 1/8th teaspoon twice daily, but they are all different

My Kara born 21 July 2009 diagnosed with EPI by cTLI test August 2010 TLI = <1...folate 14 Cobalamin 408, shot down to 94, b12 injections every other day
Lowest weight 39 pounds
We used Panzym enzymes, Tylan and Chemeyes b12 capsules
Sadly, on 10th May 2019, we lost her to DM

Re: Long-Term Tylan use
My main issue that I am not sure about is that I can taper her completely off the Tylan with normal stools. She is ok for about 6-8 weeks; then, symptoms all start to slowly come back.
I have slippery elm but she is so sensitive that I really don't want to introduce anything else. She still is not on a normal diet. I haven't been able to get her back on regular dog food. I am grateful she loves boiled chicken breast and it's been on sale. The butcher looks at me funny when I ask for 40 pounds!
I think that when I taper her, I will just keep her on a low dose 1x/day. Tylan is not too expensive, covered by insurance and vet at this point just approves prescriptions.

Re: Long-Term Tylan use
Yes, we could never get beyond two weeks without tylan. Then the symptoms would appear again. It just depends on the dog.

Re: Long-Term Tylan use
Some do require a very low maintenance dose of Tylan for life. I give Doc 1/2tsp of Slippery Elm Bark Powder twice a day with his meals - he will get it for life. You might just give it a try if you already have it on hand - if it doesn't work then you can go back to the Tylan.
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.
Re: Long-Term Tylan use
Hi Connie... my Abby was on 1 compounded capsule (approx. 1/9tsp) of Tylan twice a day after her meals. In the beginning we tried a few times to wean her off but the poops turned awful every time. She was around 75lbs and that small dose kept everything in check for years. All of our pups are different and sometimes the dosages need a little tweaking but stick with it..... Lisa
