Thinking Outside The Box

Post by Sparkle Tangerine » 14 Jul 2018, 15:45

I realise that most of you have EPI dogs, but perhaps you've encountered something similar?
Montgomery's concept of the litter box has always been sketchy. Since his diagnosis, he had gotten much better at urinating in the litter box, but when he developed a urinary tract infection (he's being treated for it) that all went out the window. He doesn't like kitty litter. He'd rather urinate on the newspaper, so I'm going to let him. I got him a new open pan that I am going to line with newspaper for him, with a wedge under one end so that he doesn't urinate on his own feet. I'm just not sure how to get him to understand that that is the place to go to the bathroom. I am considering Cat Attractant, but when I contacted the company, the answers were really off-base and I wonder if it was some sort of automatic answer thing looking for key-words and not really "listening."
Anyhow, thank you all for listening.
Montgomery was born 21 March 2012. He is a DSH orange tabby and white. Montgomery eats RCFHN Spayed/Neutered Kitten dry food and Royal Canin Ultra Light wet food. He is a catnip junkie who loves paper bags and his stuffed mouse, Ignatz. His Pank-Aid is put into capsules each day as he gets mouth ulcers if it is mixed into his food. He gets two size zero capsules with each meal and eats six times each day. He gets .5ml Ovol twice a day for his gas. He is an enormous 3.08kg and strong enough to give his veterinarian a hard time. He is smart as a whip, has the loudest purr in the universe, and is so, so loved.

I wish I had some advice but I have no experience with cats. Hopefully someone with a cat will chime in soon.
Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.

Hi, sorry I don't have any experience with cat's either. I just wanted to say Montgomery sure is adorable. I like your signature where you describe his purring. That is so cute.

Could you use a shredder and shred some newspapers to put in his litter pan? Would that satisfy his desire to use newspaper instead of litter?
Elisabeth

Riley is a 10 year old Labradoodle. She was diagnosed with EPI in 2014.
She currently eats Taste of the Wild, I cup in the morning, 2 cups in the evening, each meal with 1 Wonderlabs B12 sprinkled over her dinner. Enzymes are EnzymeDiane, 1 tsp per cup of food, mixed in home made bone broth. No other supplements or meds at this time.
Riley currently weighs about 44 pounds, which is pretty heavy for her.

Lis, the shredding of newspaper sounds like a really good idea. I had cats years ago and we always had litter box issues. One of them decided that a large potted fern was much better than a litter box. Obviously, I am of no help.

Montgomery's mom, let us know if the shredded newspaper works if you try it.

Well...Brand new open litter pan with two thick layers of paper in the bottom, a liberal sprinkling of Cat Attractant, and then shredded newspaper on top...I picked him up, put him in it, he sniffed it thoroughly, turned in a circle, curled up, and went to sleep. Last night, as I was going to bed, Morgenne, our tortoiseshell cat, had followed suit. This morning, Montgomery was asleep there again. Animals were put on this planet to challenge us, I think...
I spoke to his veterinarian this morning when we took our foster kittens and shop cats to be vaccinated and she has found something to help with his gas, but because of his small stature, it has to be compounded and will be ready on Wednesday.
And so, the saga continues...

Okay... i don't have any brilliant suggestions for you either...... but i just got to tell you.... your response post made me burst out laughing... "Well...Brand new open litter pan with two thick layers of paper in the bottom, a liberal sprinkling of Cat Attractant, and then shredded newspaper on top...I picked him up, put him in it, he sniffed it thoroughly, turned in a circle, curled up, and went to sleep. Hope you found a solution :) .................. and thanks for the chuckle!
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

Well I guess technically the "cat attractant" worked. The cat was attracted to what he thought was his new comfy memory foam mattress.
Hi all, I'm Bill. Ace was diagnosed with EPI on 5/31/18. In January, 2018 he was at the vet for routine check-up and weighed in at 34 lbs. In May after fighting with weeks of poor poo, he weighed 24.6 lbs. On Saturday July 28th, Ace was diagnosed as diabetic.
2 meals per day. He receives 6 units Vetsulin injections twice daily with each meal.
1 cup Victor Multi pro with 1/2 cup ground chicken breast, 1/4 cup sweet potato, 1/4 fat free cottage cheese. 1/2 tsp Pantenex enzymes, incubated 20-30 minutes.

Have you thought of using sand instead of litter? As a kid we had a sandbox and there were always cat turds in it lol. Also have you tried one of the litter boxes with a cover to keep the pee inside?
