anxiety

Post by Tuckaboo Pam » 30 Jul 2019, 15:38

Does the thunder anxiety ever get any better? I almost lost Tucker on a walk today, when some guys were using a nail gun. Whew! Thanks, Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Hi everybody...the reason I asked about anxiety is, it was listed as a symptom of EPI, and I would love for it to at least subside a little. Tucker gets so scared. ***But, another question I have is, since my vet doesn't think we need the EPI test, and since Tucker is doing so well, what are the other conditions that we are in danger of masking with our treatment? My vet has had me go through several different trials of things, and he seems to have eliminated other things along the way. Thank you---Pam

Hi Pam, Mickey had chronic pancreatitis so I am not sure about anxiety and EPI.
I always like to know for sure what I am treating. That way you know for sure you aren't wasting your time nor money. Personally I would have the 12 hr fasting Tli done. I had both the Tli and cPl for pancreatitis done on Mick.
One you might mask up is IBD.
My name is Jill and we live on the Hood Canal in Washington State. We currently have 2 Jack russells, TJ is 8 and Sadie is 2.

Mickey and his pancreatitis brought me to Epi4dogs.com site in 2012 to help manage it.
He lived from 6/99 - 8/2014

Mickey, Jack Russell. Chronic Pancreatitis. Dianes enzymes, 1/8t 3x/day with meals.

fear of loud noises is par for the course in any animal or person

its lousy as they have very sensitive hearing

My Kara was never fearful of thunder, or fireworks, but most are, one of mine in particular

have you considered a thundershirt ?

https://www.thundershirt.co.uk/

how about other things causing anxiety

Hi Jean. Thank you. Yes, we have tried two different sizes of thunder shirts, and he associates them with the thunder. We have tried valium, which makes him pace around bewildered, accupuncture, and now CBD treats that help him relax while he cowers in the bathroom under a big pile of blankets. I try to give him treats when it starts, but he can hear it well before I can, and I'm not always home when it storms---here in north FL, I tend to leave the bathroom set up for him, including the exhaust fan on, every day when I go to work in the summer. I may have merged food anxiety with noise anxiety when I first started learning about EPI. ---Pam

Hi Jill. Thank you for the advice. I think my vet has taken a scientific approach, treating for other conditions prior to full on epi protocol, which is the only treatment that has worked. I am saving my pennies, though, and I will get that test for Tucker when my coffee can reaches $440. It will be nice to be able to post all those numbers on my posts, and to really know what's going on! In the meantime, Tucker is doing well on 4% fiber kibble, turkey broth, chicken, enzymes, B12, and weaning off Tylan. He was never emaciated, just couldn't gain weight & he had a skinny waist with his ribs showing, along with 8 of 10 symptoms I read on The Wasting Disease article by
Dr. Becker. It is so nice to have this support group, I can't even begin to tell you how I appreciate everybody's help---Pam

Have you ever used L-theanine?
The dogs get anxious on the boat. There is a product called Anxitane you can get on Amazon by Virbac or Composure by Vetriscience . I use the Composure but you might have better luck with L-theanine capsules. The others are chews with food stuffs.

If you email Virbac or Vetriscience ask about sample packs. Vetriscience sent me a sample but it was after I ordered. The theanine caps you can get anywhere that sells vitamins usually. I use a larger dose for the jack russell then I do the aussie. Go figure

Did his anxiety appear with his EPI Symptoms or has he always been anxious about loud noises/thunder. Kolby started to have anxiety about weird things before he was diagnosed. (at 1 year) Other dogs made him anxious and even getting in the car which he had always loved. The car anxiety disappeared after we started treatment.....other-dog anxiety stayed.

That thunder/loud noise anxiety is tough. Our Bridge GSD (non EPI)had it and it was very sad. He would go into the bathroom also and hide behind the toilet. As he got older, he became anxious about more and more noises......the waffle iron indicator, football game crowd noise on TV......I wish we had had Jill's suggestions then. Let us know how he does with them.
