Question: has anyone else dealt with below issue
Jaeger is 10.5 years old and has been stable for 8+ years. He was diagnosed at age 2, he suffered from perianal Fistulas also. Two years ago he was also diagnosed with Lupus. And this past winter he had a stroke which left him with some nerve issues but most have been resolved now. This past couple weeks he is having some stool incontinence when he has been sleeping or resting and now on top of that he has had loose stools for last couple days. He eats fine, drinks fine, plays fine...no others symptoms. Wondering if he is just getting old or could it be smote serious. He was just into the vet a couple weeks to check his liver (he is on prednisone, Azathioprine, Docycycline and Niacin oh and enzymes- ALL for life due to Lupus)
Older dog having problems
Re: Older dog having problems
My first GSD "Heidi" had some fecal incontinence, started when she was 13 years old (she also had Discoid Lupus)
R.I.P. Nikki 11/21/2009 - 05/23/2023
Nikki was diagnosed with EPI in 2010
Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat canned
Slippery Elm syrup for stomach issues
1 tsp Pan-Tenex enzymes with each meal
Weekly B12 shots, pills didn't work for her
Tylan for life

Re: Older dog having problems
Sometimes as EPI pups age the amount of enzyme needs to be upped a tad. You might try increasing the enzyme by 1/8 teaspoon per meal.

Re: Older dog having problems
He has been on Prednisone for about a year and a half. He will be on it for life. That is why he goes in every four months for blood work

Re: Older dog having problems
reason I ask is that my vet always warned about loose stools with it
we never had the problem
it could be due to age, or just weakening muscle, maybe run it past the vet incase of a water infection
and I know all about perineal fistulas, its something GSD's get, and attributed to immune system faults

Re: Older dog having problems
Thank goodness his Perianal Fistulas have been under control for about five years. He is on a preventative cream we butt on his anus twice a day for past five years. This poor guy has gotten everything that goes with auto immune disease
