Sorry I'm late to chime in here. My boy had metatarsal and metacarpal fistulas - after reading an abstract on the forum about using Tacrolimus ointment in a Greyhound with the fistulas and not having a recurrence I demanded (seriously I demanded it) the dermatologist write a prescription for it. It was expensive but IT WORKED! He did get the fistulas the following year and again the ointment worked (so I avoided expensive trips to the vet and antibiotics) the next year when I noticed one starting I used the ointment and the fistulas never developed. We have now been fistula free for over a year. I followed this protocol for treatment https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26216245

DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.

Madelon: Just now saw your post, so glad the Tacrolimus worked for your boy.

Nikki is still on the Prednisone, Tacrolimus, MotaZol until her 2nd re-check on 1 Oct. Her vet mentioned putting her on Apoquel after she finished with the Pred, I'll find out more at her next appointment.

So far she is doing good, I was able to reduce her pain meds to once a day.

Nikki was diagnosed with EPI in 2010
Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat canned
Slippery Elm syrup for stomach issues
1 tsp Pan-Tenex enzymes with each meal
Weekly B12 shots, pills didn't work for her
Tylan for life

this sounds so much more positive

My Kara had the damned things most of her life, diagnosed when she was spayed, we used Sudocrem

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudocrem

not sure if you can get it over there

we also used compress made of bread and Epsom Salts, takes any infection out, its an auto immune thing and sadly, they are all likely to get it one way or another

Michaela, that sounds like a good plan. My jack is on Apoquel. Nice thing is the vet lets me ratchet down the dose accordingly to find the lowest dose that still works.

Jean: Looks like I can get the Sudocrem here also...thanks :)

Jill: Nikki was taking Apoquel too as needed for her allergies and tolerates it well. Better than the Pred long term, the side effects are not pleasant :) Fingers crossed that this will keep the fistulas in remission, if not she is going straight to Texas A&M. I'm not messing around here!
