Yearly SIBO Flare up :(

Post by Abby&Milo » 05 Sep 2019, 21:59

So Milo has been doing SOOOO well. It has been since last fall since we switched to TOTW Pacific Stream and ended Tylan. Poops have been so good for so long, such perfect poops...well now over the past week or so poops have gone south :( :(

Sometimes if there's a day a poop is a little soft I don't worry too much and things are back on track. But after all my poop recordings and experience in Milo's poop appearances (LOL) I know something is off right now. I am suspecting another SIBO flare up.

I am wondering if this is going to be a yearly occurrence with Milo, nothing else has changed with his diet to cause the change in poops either. I know some dogs are always on a low dose of Tylan, I am wondering if in cases of flare ups should I do another 45+ day course with a taper, or see if things can level back out within a few weeks of Tylan.

I also considered increasing enzymes, but it seems strange if he all of a sudden now needs more enzymes with his food in just over 1 yr.

One thing that seemed to really help him was switching to TOTW Pacific Stream last year, he has been so stable for a long time, so I have been really happy. Just mostly wondering if others experience SIBO this often after getting things stabilized and how to get back on track with Tylan...we already do slippery elm daily.

Thanks in advance!

Milo is a 3.5yr old Standard Poodle. Diagnosed with EPI on 9/01/2017 at 1.5 yrs old. TLI <1
Food: TOTW Pacific Stream. 1 tsp of 6x Enzyme Diane per cup of food. Cooked ground beef, and sometimes a bit of sardines added to food as a small topper. One B12 pill with intrinsic factor added to food daily. One pump of salmon oil twice daily with each meal. 1/2 tsp of Slippery Elm morning and night with each meal. 10mg of Pepcid or Omeprazole once a day for acid reflux. Milo eats about 3+ cups of food per day with added toppings (free feeding). Current weight 41lbs, lowest weight was ~32lbs, and his weight before EPI signs was 38lbs. Very stable weight now. Go Milo! <3

Hi Abby. So glad to hear Milo is doing well.
I would first do the course of Tylan. Some dogs are on it for life. It is pretty mild and does the job for most dogs.
I would leave the enzyme dose the same and start with Tylan.
Sometimes as dogs age they need a little increase in enzyme. Just keep in mind too much enzyme can have the same effect on stools as too little.

Thanks for the feedback.

Milo had a perfect poop today on our walk, so already things have improved. I will keep him on the Tylan for now. Luckily I have no problem getting him to eat it! :)

I kept Kara on 1/16th teaspoon for 4 years

after she shed her bowel during one nasty SIBO episode we couldn't chance it

I agree with the 45 days of tylan. We were never able to get Kolby off an antibiotic. Good to hear from you. Glad he is doing well otherwise.
