Re: Grain free
The link to the cardio group on facebook is very informative and I do belong to that group. However they advise getting off of grain free food and this group advises to stay on it. Confuses a person even more.
Re: Grain free
All of the diets serve a purpose. One reason a grain free diet is encouraged with EPI is the grains can inhibit how well the enzymes work for the dogs. If you feed grain free make sure meats are first and try to go away from peas and or lentils, or make sure those items are low on the list. Manufacturers are now using pea fiber, peas, garbanzos instead of meat for proteins.

Re: Grain free
I'm still reading through the UNITS and am shocked at how many dogs have gotten sick with DCM. Nikki's food is on the safe list (Royal Canin) so I have stopped supplementing with Taurine.

Re: Grain free
We recommend treating the condition you know your dog has - in this case EPI - which MOST (not all but MOST) do better on grain free food. You have to really get into the weeds of the grain free, taurine issue to fully understand it because it's confusing - grain free does not cause DCM and there is much more research needed. What we know is that grains can interfere with the efficacy of enzymes but how much we do not know for certain, especially because every EPI dog is different as to what they can tolerate and what they can't. Madelon, owned by DOC. DOC dx EPI 5/2015 = TLI < .4, B12 406; Folate >24. DOC taught me so much and together we battled and overcame EPI, food sensitivies, environmental allergies but we lost the cancer battle. DOC was dx with hemangiosarcoma 5/2022 and crossed the rainbow bridge July 24, 2022. He is and always will be the love of my life, my soulmate, my heart dog.
