Looking for some direction.. I’m very concerned for my darling Roxy.. She was diagnosed with EPI about 6 years ago and then was diagnosed with diabetes about 3 years ago. A couple of months.. we’ve managed to keep everything all good with her EPI and diabetes for quite a long time. A couple of months ago she injured her back leg and was put on a carprofen for pain management. Her leg got better within about a month and was no longer hiking it. I did notice a small amount of blood in her poop. I did discontinue the carprofen. But then she seemed to have all over body pain and walking slowly, spending more time in bed. Her vet said to keep her on the carprofen and put her on glucosamine. So I did. Her symptoms got worse. She started slowly loosing her appetite and in body pain. She completely stopped eating and drinking a couple of weeks ago and I had to remove her off of her usual food and start her purée blend of chicken and rice to syringe feed her. I took her to the vet 2 days back to back to have fluids administered. At first the vet said she has stomach ulsers, then possibly pancreatitis and now he has no clue of what’s causing all this. Her body temperature has been up to 105 at times. He currently has her on a antacid (famotidine 20 mg) 1/2 a tablet once a day, Denamarin for liver support, Gabapentin 100 mg every 12 hrs, folate 800 mcg at 1 per day, vitamin b injections at 1 per week, Amoxiclav 1.3 cc 2 times per day. Her stools are no longer formed and brown. My baby is very ill and we are at a loss of what to do .. please help..

Hi Regina, welcome to you and Roxy. I am sorry your pup is having issues.

Kiya was on Carprofen and it can cause vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and an increase in thirst and urination. We had a liver panel done every 3mos to make sure she was doing fine on the med. We changed to Gallaprant after a year and she is doing good.Have your pups liver values been checked lately?

Did your vet run a snapCpl in office to rule out pancreatitis? It presents itself differently in dogs. Lethargy, loss of appetite, stretching in the play position after eating, sore abdomen.

Side effects of Gabapentin are depression, loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting.

Thank you

Jill

Yes, the doc did a CBC . Her liver enzymes were through the ROOF a couple of weeks ago. I put her on SAM E and her liver values came back down into normal range. But upon the last CBC than her white blood cells had sky rocketed... so he put her on antibiotic and a antacid in the assumption that she had developed stomach ulcers while being on The carprofen. She is no longer digesting the Sam E. I found the Sam E in her stools as of recent. I’m now crushing up the Sam E.

Oh geez... i typed a LONG response to you earlier today and when i came on the forum tonight my post is gone (sigh!!!!)

I am so sorry you are having these issues.... I too honed in on carprofen as a dog that is sensitive to carprofen can have the symptoms you are describing. But it is also possible that something else is going on.

Definitely crush the SAMe... and what you might want to try, especially since your vet thinks maybe ulcers developed is to get some SLippery Elm powder,
https://www.wonderlabs.com/itemleft.php?itemnum=K97024 . Dosing instructions for Slippery elm are by weight and included on this page: https://epi4dogs.com/slippery-elm/.... jsut be sure to always add a tablespoon or so of water to the meal with the slippery elm powder

and start including in her meals.... this is will create a mucilage coating, is safe and will help any damage done to the gut with the ulcers. AND it is also a prebiotic.. so if this infection is raging SID,,,, it will help with that also. What antibiotic is she on?

Hi Regina,

I am so sorry that Roxy is having such difficulties. You have already received good advice. I don't have experience with pancreatitis or the medication you mentioned, but I hope you find solutions soon. It is so hard to see our pups struggling. Please keep us updated.

Pupdate on Roxy- This morning I took her to vet appointment after I syringe fed her a half cup of purée chicken breast/white rice with a quarter teaspoon plus a 1/8 teaspoon of Diane enzymes 6X, milk thistle, crushed Sam E, a dose of amoxiclav antibiotic and her diabetic injection. At the vet her temperature registered at 104.2. He mentioned she may have irritable bowel syndrome. I mentioned to him that I can tell her EPI is currently all out of whack...Today he switched her antibiotic Metronidazole 100 mg to be given 2 times per day. QUESTION “Is it safe & will it help her to give the slippery elm while on Metronidazole and the prescribed antacids ? QUESTION is it best to give all supplements & prescribed medications with the enzymes ? Thank you in advance for your feedback ..

Roxy Pupdate-Late Last night she vomited some of her dinner up. This morning I added a 1/8 of a teaspoon of slippery elm Powder into her purée chicken/rice food as she is just under 10 pounds. I also ordered the vitamin B with folate built into them that most in this group have success with. Praying my baby gets some positive balance soon and feels better🙏🏻 When raging SID is present than do most EPI pups get a fever ?
