Kara shed her bowel when she had a very severe SID, and she put herself to bed in our bed, under the duvet, we gave her scrambled egg and mashed potato not sure about the white cell elevation

I am so sorry you and Roxy are going through this.

We have had to switch to metronidazole several times with Kolby when he had setbacks with SID and he has had no ill effects. It calmed the SID and restored his poos to healthy ones. However, some dogs in rare instances have had negative effects from metro......so you should just be aware.

I have never observed a fever in Kolby when he had SID/SIBO but others can chime in here.

Sending lots of healing energy.

Hi Regina,

I hope the Slippery Elm calms things down for her....if she does have IBS,,,,, the SLippery Elm will actually help her !!!!

Technically Slippery Elm has mucilage properties, coats the intestines, so it may inhibit to a very small degree the full effectiveness of any medicine given.
I personally have given Slippery Elm together with these antibiotics.....Metronidazole and/or Tylan and or Amoxycillan simply because you've got leeway with these antibioitics... however, when i had to give Lysodren(or Mitodane) to my dog with Cushings ... these drugs had to be very exact... and at those times, i gave the slippery elm about an hour or two away from the cancer drug.

Generally, SID does not involve a fever.... so i suspect something else is triggering this infection, BUT.... along with it, most likely, as with any EPI dog, SID is present and yes it does get out of control. Slippery Elm sometimes can help with out of control SID, but other times, you need an antibiotic. In most out-of control SID situations, Tylan (Tylosin tartrate 100 gram) antibiotic works better than Metronidazole, but not always.....some dogs jsut don't respond wo Tylan and then Metro is advised. It all depends on what type of bacteria imbalance is going on and where (small intestine or large intestine).

However, the fact that little Roxy has a fever ... sounds like more than SID is going on (infection) and your vet probably made the right choice going with Metronidazole instead of Tylan in this case. Hopefully the fever will subside with the Metronidazole. Is Metro safe? yes and no. Yes it is safe, but some dogs develop a toxicity to it, even after being on it multiple times in the past with no issues.... although this doesn't happen often ...it can happen. What you need to watch for is if Roxy displays any back leg weakness (as if she has some sort of neurological problem) or her just acting really weird. If she does, stop the metro immediately (and the symptoms should go away) and call your vet to let him/her know what happened.

The other concern is any kind of infection in a diabetic dog can make them really sick. SO it is a very good thing that the vet started Roxy on Metro. Paws and Fingers crossed that this helps!

Please continue to keep us posted and let us know how Roxy is doing.

I'm so sorry you and Roxy are going through this. I too have a "Roxy" (non-EPI). I'm glad Olesia chimed in - please keep us posted on how things are going.
