Hi
MY 14 old lab has had a two year history chronic pancreatitis .She later developed loss of stamina, loss weight periodic diarrhea,.stiffness sometimes ,unable to climb stairs, bloating, passing gas good appetite. She has been stable for three months. Her vet in oct felt she might have cancer.XRAY showed buildup of food in stomach.DX seemed to shift, lol
She is sitting by me now in peace. :D
I started the 6x enzyme.I let it soak about 30 minutes>Before I gave her a second feeding I noticed heavy panting and anxiety.I stopped the treatment and the symptoms went away.I did let a batch soak longer and noticed it completly broke down the kibble to a slurry.
I wonder if these symptoms developed with others and how they dealth with them. Thanks much
john

Hi John and welcome to you and Tasha. Did you have a repeat cPl to see if Tasha's pancreatitis resolved itself? What low fat diet was/is she on? Sometimes chronic pancreatitis can turn into EPI

https://epi4dogs.com/pancreatitis-to-epi/

Was she given something in October to help move the food along?

Mickey was 12 when diagnosed chronic pancreatitis but over his next 2 years there was no panting.

Did the vet recommend the enzymes?

If it was me before using the enzymes I would rule out pancreatitis and EPI.

Not sure about some of the symptoms. Gas, bloating, acid reflux was she put on an antibiotic?

Hi Jill
Thanks for the thread.
She started having pancretis in 2017.
I found a food earthborne weight control and she seemed stable few flareups.
In june 2019 she had a flareup ,went to vet had cerenia shot.
Also had a complete blood test Tests were mostly normal,or slightly off
Since then she has slowly gone downhill, mostly mobility problems
For awhile I thought maybe lyme as I had it in summer but I gave her a amoxicllion and no improvement
Her weight has slipped some in 3 months about 7 lbs
She avoids stairs but she can walk slowly almost a mile
Her sight is bad but hears well her eyes are reddish somewhat now I think her sight affects her mobilty.
Her poop is ok almost a 1 now with pumpkin
her food is nature's choice always hungry. She ate some live fish one day when I was fishing.
She seems her best before meals
She sort of looks distressed laying down but ok when up.but she sleeps well and no major incontinence
After meals she bloats ,gas better with pumpkin heard slippery elm would help

Hi
One thing more id like to adis her bloat has gotten better off the earthborn, better on cooked diet but poop was not.lol
Her abdomen has been swollen some since pancreatitis almost three years
her abdomen more on the right side seems extended and looks like a gyrating spasm at times. When she had flareups you could always tell with her stomach sounds and movement but then her appetite was bad never ravenous.
Her panting came after ist dose enzyme holding off till she sees a vet

Thanks much everyone

Hey, John, I may be coming from way out in left field, but have you tried giving her smaller, more frequent meals? You mentioned she's better before she eats, and I know that if my Maltese manages to steal some of my other dogs' food & eats too much, she pants. Panting can be a sign of pain or discomfort. ---Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

Hey John, Pam makes a good point but I assume you are feeding 3 or 4 small meals per pancreatitis protocol. Is it the Adult Natures Choice Grainfree? I am wondering as the fat is minimum 12%.(that is not dry weight matter.

Hello John
I haven’t experienced pancreatitis in dogs, but mine developed all Tasha symptoms when she first became ill. It was described as protein losing enteropathy. The fluid in the abdomen (ascites) presses on the heart, making them pant. It is a description of the condition caused by a list of problems. My dog was immediately put on steroids and antibiotics, and this relieved the problem whilst her particular diagnosis for epi was followed. Both the vet and I had believed she wasn’t going to last.
There are articles on this website under ‘associated conditions’ on PLE, but this article is considerably easier to read
https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/ ... le-in-dogs

My vet was insistent in treating my dog for her most life threatening symptom first, which was this, then identifying the gut problem. I fed her anything she would eat.

Regarding enzymes...if you leave them too long, they will have started digesting the food in the bowl, into a a pile of digested sick. Many dogs sensibly won’t touch it. If you don’t have epi, just feed simple low-fat food, scrambled eggs are good, white fish based food. And if it works forTasha, pasta or rice for energy . Chicken might be ok. I’ve had a lab, so I know they will eat till they burst if allowed. I knew mine , aged 15, was fading when she wouldn’t eat.
Best wishes.
Springer spaniel Marti had Epi, PLE , MMM just to confuse me. She lived till 12yrs, chubby and happy despite eight years of epi.
Capsule enzymes suited her best. B12 supplements made her into a new dog!
After a cocker with PLN kidney disease, I now have two healthy rescues, a lively, suicidal , small ginger terrier, adopted with pneumonia, and gum disease needing nearly all his teeth out, and a fluffy grey toy poodle/terrier from Greece.

HI
Since my last post I think her pancretis is not the problem. She has had good bm for awhile. My experiment with home cooked food might have caused problems.
I think now she has Cushing disease. It would explain just about all her symptoms
potbelly,ravenous appetite big water intake,lethargy,poor coat,muscle wasting,hind quarter weakness,poor eyesight,effects older dogs more.
Her last blood test in June was also inline with Cushing.
Trouble is many vets around here want to give the dog a lot of expensive tests. She only needs a special urine test so I can get her dx for the drug.
Cushing can cause pancreatitis and I think my dog was effected by it.
So now I'm looking for a good reasonable vet to help her.
Thanks for your help so far
john
