Our life is a nightmare

I took Phoenix to a new vet today to get blood work done and an ultrasound. They have to knock him out to do this so they used Isoflourine gas which he had had before. Phoenix had developed a bad cough from the powdered pancreas as well that they were going to check out.
Everything seemed to go well until I got home. Then, Phoenix developed very loud respiration and a fast heartbeat. It sounded like a very loud asthma. I called the vet on call and he told me it sounded like lung irritation from the anesthesia. The noise from his lungs is so loud you can hear him in the dining room from the living room.
They said to give him one half of a prednisone which I did. It has been going on since 7pm and it is now 1:30 in the morning. They said if it is no better in the morning to call them. Also he gave Phoenix chewable Clavamox tablets to take. These things are huge and I am having to cut them into 6 pieces to get them down him. What was this vet thinking?
My poor baby sounds terrible and I am so scared. He has been through a lot these last three weeks and now he is worse.
