New to EPI. Mixture question

Post by k1r6y5 » 05 Aug 2020, 21:31

My almost 7 year old German shepherd was just diagnosed with EPI. We received PancrePlus in powdered form today. My question is about mixing it with the food. Can I just put the appropriate amount of the powder in some water (say 1/2 cup), mix, then pour over his food & let it sit for the 20 minutes? Or do I have to put the powder on the food first?

I don't think it matters as long as you get the lumps out of the enzymes in water. It is quite easy to sprinkle the enzyme on the food, add room temp water, stir and incubate. Stir again before serving.

Thank you! It just makes a huge mess sprinkling it on the food, then trying to stir. Maybe we just need a bigger bowl!

hmm... i answered this post but it appears that this thread showed up twice.... i'll go in and delete the other post and post my response here (which basically is the same response of Jill's... so at least we are consistent  )
Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........

you can mix the powder in some water... but then, IMHO, it doesn't really mix well..... i found that it mixes better if you add the powder to the food and THEN add enough water to moisten the powder to the food, mix, let sit for 20 minutes and it should be good.

Not sure how much food you are giving, but as an example, when giving 1 cup of dry food, add 1 tsp of powdered enzymes and then mix in about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of room temp water.

Hope this helps!

Hi Tanya, it's Pam, Tucker's mom. I thought I'd share how I mix his food. I do use a very large ceramic bowl for Tucker's food. I first put in the enzymes, tylan, and B12, then put the kibble on top, and then add liquid. Tucker eats 1 1/2 cups of kibble, twice a day. I'd say I put close t 1/4 cup liquid on top of the kibble, and then I swish the bowl around to get it all mixed together. The powder doesn't leave the bowl, and I don't lose any enzymes on a spoon. When he was first diagnosed, I was buying the enzymes from the vet, and I was really worried about losing any little smidge because they were so expensive. I get them from Diane, now, so I don't need to be quite so frugal, but I just never changed my habits. Take care.
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.
