Drinking water

Post by Floramac » 11 Sep 2020, 08:55

Kenzie has now been diagnosed, after two blood tests as dehydrated. We need to encourage her to drink more. Apart from adding more water to her meals the general consensus seems to be adding flavourings to her water. I have read about broth but does anyone have any thoughts on what to use without upsetting her epi?
Thanks
Kenzie diagnosed Sept 2015. Fed 3 times a day on Millies Wolfheart, Panzym enzymes 1+ tsp per 120grams food, 1/8 tsp tylan twice a day, altenate 1/2 b12 per day. Also on 1 previcox a day for arthritis in paws and 1 Apoquel for allergies. Diagnosed with poor heart contractibility Sept 2020, on 1 Vetmedin twice a day. 2nd heart scan March 21 shows little deterioration so appear to be working.

Latest TLI was 5.5 Previous readings have been TLI - 3.4 and 4.2.

hi there I love that picture

ok, broth could have salt in it, so if you make it yourself then maybe,

what were the symptoms of her having the blood tests, did the vets consider IV saline, and how long was it before you went to the vets

has she always been a low water drinker ?

I have never had this other than after an operation when we had to syringe water into the mouth, via the gums

sorry about the questions, was this all the vet found

Lots of tests recently. Found a heart problem so saw a specialist, absolutely wonderful man. He repeated blood tests and has confirmed dehydration but not really bad. She has never been great drinker.
Thanks

Good morning. About 3 times a year Kiya goes into a vomiting jag and can't keep anything down. We go to the vet, they put a boulous of fluid under the skin on the shoulders which is absorbed over the night and some Cerenia. I feed both dogs Swanson no fat no salt broth periodically. They love it. Ice chips throughout the day( machine set on crush) or water the broth down and make flavored ice.

ice cubes could be the answer, they chase them

however, I read somewhere along the line that animals with heart murmour might sleep with their mouth open, thetefore, could lose water that way

but that was a while ago

would she eat cucumber by any chance

No won't eat cucumber. She likes bananas, so make her a frozen kong with banana and a little yoghurt.
Her heart problem is the left chamber, contractions are less than 50% so now on vetmedin. Also recent start of urinary incontinence, just started Incurin after check up and seems to have started to work already. Everything at once!

Hi there. My vet has me make turkey bone broth, and tells me to give as much as they will drink during our hot Florida summers. There is a video I'm sending you in a message. I follow it pretty closely, using the suggested turkey wing parts I buy from an old-fashioned butcher. I'm sure it's fine to leave out the salt & vinegar, as her focus in the video is glucosamine, and you are looking for hydration.---Pam
Tucker was a shepherd/lab mix--- TLI 1.3, Folate 9.7, Cobalamin 666, Lipase 38. Took Diane's Enzymes 4 teaspoons/day, Wonderlabs B12 one capsule per day, and Tylan 1/16 teaspoon/ morning (to hold SID at bay). Taste of the Wild High Prairie, 1 1/2 cups/day, with a total of 4 cups of Fresh Pet. Stopped eating everything in sight, and went from 60 to 85 pounds! Tucker was my boyfriend, and my husband was OK with that. Tucker succumbed to hemangiosarcoma, but we cherished every day we had with that wonderful, beautiful boy. I will always, always miss my sweet big boy.

i used to roast chicken breasts for my izzy and basically would bake with a cover and it consequently gave me a ton of broth with no salt. So making your own brother would be ideal because then there is no salt involved...... Also here in the USA, many of us make home-made Pedialyte to rectify dehydration.... (or you can buy it, but just buy the unflavored one- -they make it for babies :)) Here is a recipe for home-made doggie Pedialyte:
http://phillipsdawghouse.com/homemade-p ... edialyte/

however... i used to make the human baby version which was just water, salt & sugar.......

Olesia, was owned by Izzy, a 35lb Spanish Water Dog (SWD), Diagnosed at 1.5 years old - TLI results 1.. Izzy passed away on February 13, 2020 at 15 years old. She lived with EPI for 13+1/2 years. It was because of Izzy that Epi4Dogs was started... she was the inspiration. May her legacy of helping others with EPI continue for as long as needed.........
